I too have been optimistic about every single hire since the fat man, and have too been duped every single time. It's amazing to strike out so badly in every manner. Getting new and up-and-coming coach, the proven winner, the homegrown guy off the staff getting a shot, and just sorrow for over a decade.

This job can ruin anyone.

I am on board with just giving guys P5 shots and just keep trying again. Short of like someone stupidly firing a Mike Leach or something.

Rock Chalk Talk is saying that contract talks with Monken stalled over the assistant coaches salary pool so Goff went back to Leipold.

It felt like Monken was the greater risk with perhaps the higher ceiling while Monken was as close to the 'safest' pick as possible. Either one would have been a significant upgrade over anyone this program has had since Mangino.

We all got jaded by the 'rah rah' and energy that Monken could have brought but slow and steady that Leipold should bring is just as exciting!

Love it.

Bryson is the BryBryGuy yeah?

I know our assistant pool is not Texas, but it has been significantly improved. Wonder what the service academies pay. Did Monken just leverage raises for he and his staff?

If you didn’t land your 1st choice because of assistant coach money, you hardly “nailed” the test.

But, sports people are dumb, so the tweet actually makes sense

I just don't think a successful G5 or Independent coach is thinking, "I wanna go to Kansas for a pay raise." Wondering if Monken was all that serious.

If not, whatever, deuces, the offense thing was a huge question mark and P5 schools aren't touching him.

If Monken was our guy and we lost him over assistant coach salaries, then.... well.... I don’t know what to tell ya.

I’m fine with Leipold. I wanted Monken though.

Have to say though, this hire doesn’t really excite me. At all. Maybe that’s just due to a decade of incompetence in our program.

I was fine with either but would have ranked Leipold over Monken.

I’ll take out of the box thinking over strict regiment (i.e. military)

He's the perfect choice to be their interim head coach this fall if you ask me.

Email from Goff:

The future is bright! After an extensive national search, we have hired the next leader of Kansas Football. I am proud to introduce Lance Leipold as the head football coach at the University of Kansas.

Coach Leipold brings extensive experience building championship programs and sustained success at each level. Here are some of his notable achievements:

Career Record of 146-39 (a winning percentage of 79%) as a Head Coach
Has won 6 National Championships at Wisconsin-Whitewater
Has been a part of 17 conference championships
Reached 100 wins in his first 106 games, becoming the fastest coach in NCAA history to win 100 games.
Six-Time American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year at Wisconsin-Whitewater; more AFCA Coach of the Year awards than any active coach at any level.
Most recently as the head coach at Buffalo – which he built into a power in the Mid-American Conference:

Two-Time MAC Coach of the Year, including this past season.
Guided the Bulls to a No. 23 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 this past season – the highest ranking in school history
Buffalo has three players expected to be drafted this weekend – the program hasn’t had multiple draft picks in 14 years.
He has had 24 players earn first-team all-conference honors the past two seasons.
Last Season, Buffalo was the No. 1 rushing team in the country and ranked No. 7 nationally in total defense.
We are thrilled to welcome Coach Leipold, his wife, Kelly, daughter, Lindsey, and son, Landon to our Jayhawk family. I have no doubt that you are going to be incredibly impressed with the way he conducts himself on a daily basis and the dedication he brings to the development of our student-athletes.

We took a diligent approach throughout this search which included internal evaluations of every aspect of our football program. That process included engaging various constituents, including our football student-athletes, in identifying characteristics and attributes that were needed in the next head football coach. The responses that stood out the most included the following descriptions: passionate, leader, high integrity, developer of men, program builder and winner. Rest assured Coach Leipold exudes each and every one of those attributes.

I am thankful for the continued leadership of interim head coach Emmett Jones and the rest of the coaching staff. They have done an exceptional job leading our young men during a challenging time.

Thank you for your continued support during this important chapter for the University of Kansas. It is time for all Jayhawks to come together behind Coach Leipold and our football student-athletes as we chart a new course for Kansas Football.

Rock Chalk!

Travis
