Another Stimulus Check?
Re: Another Stimulus Check?
Not very much smart going on in this thread. It might help some folks read about this country from 1929 to 1933 what had to be done just TO START digging out of the ditch. Back then, Wall Street executives were selling apples and were in soup lines. This country is still in a ditch. We would be a lot better off if Covid-19 was not called "just another hoax" like the Russian investigation.

Because burger flippers deserve to be paid $20 an hour. Right. So you've said.
Another option would be that minimum wage was never intended to be a destination and should be motivation to move up in the world, not incentive to be a 45 year-old doing work intended for a 16 year-old.

Here's a quick read for some of the intellectual deficient posters.

In summary: The "Free Market" is a myth you've been brainwashed into believing.
Next: Go read a couple books

Re: Another Stimulus Check?
TDub, just read a book sometime. As an example, not an anecdote, out of 254 of Texas counties, the rural 210 counties had no electricity. This was in 1936. Less than three generations ago, people lived in cabins like Abe Lincoln. No lights. No running water. In an arid land. And the push-back from the utility companies to the Rural Electrification Act was that the "free market" cannot afford to provide power lines to over half the population of America. Maybe, just maybe, the executives espousing the benefits of the "free market" need to help their fellow citizens. Because, guess what, the executives made a killing when the power lines were provided.

Do you even NEED electricity to flip burgers?

Where’d I say that? (About never flippers and $20 an hour). You sure you aren’t putting words in my mouth?JKLivin wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 10:50 amBecause burger flippers deserve to be paid $20 an hour. Right. So you've said.

And that’s a good observation. In fact, that’s precisely the problem I’m trying to discuss! Employers wanna marginalize their staff positions, then wonder why no one wants to work for them? That’s not the free market, that’s having yer cake and eating it too.
Maybe if employers DID treat their openings as some kind of “destination,” as you call it, where there IS a competitive enough incentive to work, maybe people will work.
Cuz, “please come work for us but we’re not giving you any better than high school wages” isn’t exactly a lucrative recruiting pitch. Perhaps the issue is, again as you put it, that those workers found the “motivation to move up in the world,” and simply don’t wanna bother with those shit jobs no more?

I have an undergrad degree in ecomonics. I'm comfortable with my grasp of the concept thanks.

Finally, someone on here who gets it. It's a nice refreshing change.JKLivin wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 10:24 amExactly. When being unemployed is as or more profitable than working, it is because government is making it that way by handing out fake money. We'll all be paying for it in inflation and higher taxes real soon.TDub wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 8:31 am Not sure how many times someone has to say it. This isnt the free market problem. The free market doesnt account for unemployment benefits...particularly not UI + $300 weekly.
Shocking, just Shocking that you follow something on instagram called the anti capitalist. Im blown away by the surprise.
It reminds me of a professor I had in grad school who told the story of teaching in Russia for a semester. His driver was taking him across town when he saw a large group of men hanging out in a city park. Some were kicking around a soccer ball, some were taking a nap under the trees, and some were just standing around smoking. He asked the driver what was going on.
"It's just the city workers," he replied. "They all have guaranteed jobs. They get paid the same if they work all day or if they lounge around in the park."
That is where we are headed. Imitating a system that has failed across history and across cultures. Pure stupidity.

Re: Another Stimulus Check?
I really hope he's joking about the undergrad degree. How the fuck could you get a degree in economics and think the "Free Market" isn't a myth that's pedaled by the rich to convince the poor to fight for the rich people rights. Lots of parallels between the belief in the "Free Market" and religion.
Je ne vois pas dans la religion le mystère de l'Incarnation mais le mystère de l'Ordre Social. La religion rattache au ciel une idée d'égalité qui empêche le riche d'être massacré par le pauvre

Re: Another Stimulus Check?
I have no idea what that says, but since it’s in Paris talk or whatever, I assume it’s sexy.
Re: Another Stimulus Check?
It's Napoleon's take on religion. Essentially, religion is what prevents the poor from murdering the rich.
Re: Another Stimulus Check?
man, this thread is wild.
We got Tdub bragging about his economics education while also dodging the request to educate me about economics.
Then, with his trademark not addressing any points I made, Lobster shows up to double down on the double down anecdote about the economics of some Russian cab driver.
Then outta nowhere, cascadia swoops in all Pepe Le Pew style to proposition a ménage a trois!

Hmm, my Senior thesis in History and Econ was "The Mexican Expropriation of United States Oil Interests in 1936 and its Effect on U.S. oil reserves for World War II."
What was your thesis TDub?
