So the TV randomly crapped out.

Like I turned it on, it came on as usual for about 10 seconds, then just went black and won’t come back on.

It’s like 4 or 5 years old. Any troubleshooting tips? Or is it just normal for TVs to not last long any more?

I think that’s a feature of modern markets, though, not a flaw?

Capitalism needs us to be constantly consuming. If companies built shit that didn’t break, we wouldn’t be in the market again.

But for durables like TVs, if it’s built to be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, that might really cut into sales.

Very overgeneralized. Lots of things are made better and last longer today than in the past. The one we are perhaps the most reminded of are cars. They last well into the 6 digit miles now and manufacturers stand behind them for years.

Absolutely. Sister's family is in this business and vast majority of complaints/problmes are related to the bells and whistles.

Get a deep freeze whose sole function is to keep things frozen and it will last a very long time under proper care. New ones use way less energy.

I can work on an old car and keep it running. I cant even get into the engine compartment of the new cars and if i dont have a computer program specific to that car i cant do shit to fix it.

Might be true in your case, and certainly in mine, but it doesn't change the statistical fact that newer cars last longer on average. Any mechanic will tell you the same thing and the used car market also reflects that. Some of it is the extinction of the timing belt.

I’ve often wondered if there would be much of a market for cars specifically designed to be easy to self-service

cuz most cars seem engineered in the other direction

That’s a good thought, but also might cut both ways.

Anecdotally, my buddy who’s a manager at some big dealership has whined that it’s impossible to get good true mechanic work any more.

They stopped with the title of mechanic, cuz hardly any applicant has a mechanical understanding of cars, and just call them “service specialists” or some shit, cuz it’s mostly entry level kids who saw fast and the furious and thought it would be a fun job but ultimately need to be trained how to do an oil change.

It's a strange coincidence that my friend Charlotte posted this when last week I was talking to my mother about musicians, actors/actresses, and athletes, who I have met and how some were as cool as could be and some were complete assholes - with very little rhyme or reason for their behavior.

I have heard VERY mixed things about Billy Corgan. I met him once in a grocery store. Just said, "Hey Billy - big fan" and went on my way. He said thank you and that was it. Perfectly cordial encounter.
I have a friend who told me Corgan was an asshole to him for no good reason.
I know a couple of people who hang out with him on occasion and say he is as cool as can be.

You look at the guy in the photograph and if you don't know who he is, you figure he's just some schmuck sitting at a table in a restaurant. The woman is my friend Charlotte and her husband is Matt Walker (fairly well known drummer).
