The GM at a place I go to a lot was lamenting, the other day, their inability to find cooks. "McDonald's is paying $18/hour," he whined, "what am I supposed to do?"

don’t get me wrong, i’m itching like no other to travel

it just seems like a dumb decision right now, unless it’s absolutely necessary (work, family, etc). i especially would stay away from places where there are bound to be massive influxes if tourists, like hawaii

I have traveled for leisure in 2021 and it worked out great. You just have to know what you are getting into, do a lot of homework, and not be an asshole.

Hawaii right now, I'd stay the fuck away from Waikiki and maybe the entire island of Oahu. Packed to the gills is not my preference pandemic or no pandemic.

Mrs 99 and our kids are in Myrtle Beach this weekend. They seem to be having good time. Getting transportation from the airport to the hotel was a little bit of an issue but they got a Lyft eventually and it was pretty cheap. She tried to get a rental car, no go there.

Waikiki was crowded, but things were open and functional. It took a little longer to get into things and you had to walk more than normal, but it wasn't bad. Kauai, on the other hand, was a cluster hump. Was not prepared for that experience.

See my post below. It was not all bad. Some unpleasant surprises here and there, but also lots of good experiences and opportunities to connect with people in the same boat. Shared a cab to Lihue Airport with a nice couple from San Diego whose shuttle reservation had blown them off. Heard the stories and struggles of locals who have suffered during the pandemic. It put minor annoyances in perspective.

I do wish they had been more up front about the challenges that still exist. It would have been helpful to know what we were walking into. Seems like they pulled the trigger on reopening before they had the infrastructure in place to handle it, and it was a little rough.

The economy there seems to rely heavily on tourism, so the locals were bending over backward to be welcoming and accommodating. The bottom line is that there were too many tourists and not enough people back to work. Still had some great experiences - Waimea Canyon, NaPali Coast, and Puka Dogs were all good.

Having worked in a tourism economy for years myself, the only time I’ve ever heard of locals bending over backward to be accommodating when they’re not on the clock, is if they’re trying to bang you.
