Lol. I wonder if you could get by in college going the super cheap route... Just get her a raspberry pi and a monitor. Isn't everything web-based anyway? (I suppose I have no idea what college classes are like these days... Can't believe I wasted time on a frikkin COBOL class)

Lot of laptops in classes now. Office Suite, web-based, and Zoom are big ones. And then KU makes you download a shitty anti-virus client. Grad students use SPSS.

But, mostly, I wouldn't want to send an 18-year-old kid into the wild with a machine that few know how to troubleshoot.

And why does she need a Mac for college? Just because it's the OS she's used to?

Can't let her be labeled a poor person or gamer nerd on the first day of move in.

It's what she was issued for the last 4 years for high school. She's used to them and knows them well.

Why do people like macs?

I do just because of the Linux compatibility... But aside from that I just don't get it.

I have never used a Mac before but my kid has always used them for school. We have to buy her a new MacBook Pro this summer before she heads off to college since she no longer gets one from her school. They are absurdly overpriced as far as PCs go but that's Apple in general.

I would highly doubt she needs a Pro.

I am paying for it out of her 529 plan so I don't mind getting her the most processing power out there.

I made it through college and grad school with (no computer year 1) and some dumpy ass gateway desktop after that.


But, it should be noted that I also havent had a home computer of any kind since i graduated....so what...like 15 or 16 years since grad school? I just dont like or use the damn things. I jave, of course, used them extensively at work until i went back to the field, now never again.

That's true. Which, is why I dont have a purpose for a laptop or desktop.

I love Apple products from the iPod (yes I still have and use it), to iPhones and IPads, they are far superior. As far as computers, I can't really say. I've always used Microsoft based laptops for work since I generally just use Excel, PowerPoint and Word. And my HP work laptop is very fast. It's suped up to run financial models.

What’s CPU and GPU? Or SSD? And memory and storage and other metrics?

Go with the M1 Air and don't look back. I did 16GB of memory to future proof, but I don't think it was even necessary. Physical storage is kind of a thing of the past so I went with the 256 GB and rely on external and cloud storage.

The Pro's with M1's are for pros. And priced like it.
