Its never about anything but money. Every side of every fence.

Re: Violence
Why is “get money out of politics” such a partisan issue?
I say partisan because, besides me griping about it, the only time I remember anyone saying much is when DC tried to convince us the lib assault on Citizens United was just as dogged as the conservative assault on Roe

Re: Violence
Landscape would certainly look different if corporate donations were eliminated.
Private donations only and capped at.....say 10% of your income (as reported on your taxes) per year with some sort of nominal exception made for retirees.

Re: Violence
Surprisingly I disagree that money in and of itself is the root of all problems. If we eliminate donations in one way the motivated will just find another way.
I emphasize on “surprisingly” because this is one aspect where I agree with Newt Gingrich (if this is still his position). Eliminate all caps on political donations and turn into a total free-for-all with the following two conditions.
1. No tax deduction on donations to any organization involved in political activities (with the sole exception of voter registration)
2. Every donation received by a candidate in excess of $99 (total contributions) from a single source for each election cycle must be disclosed within 30 days of reaching that limit. Failure to disclose will result in a fine of $1000/day/donor - this way there is sufficient motivation to report everything
We get to see in plain sight who is a wholly owned subsidiary of which entity. If constituents don’t mind then they deserve to get appropriate representation. After all Marjorie Taylor Greene was elected fair and square.

Re: Violence
I think shedding light on money in politics is just as good a thought as getting money out of it.
Re: Violence
I have no idea other than to limit magazine capacity. Background checks. Red flag laws.
Maybe some basic training for concealed carry. I don't like guns. I've never owned one. I have no idea how to safely carry one around in public. But in an increasing number of states, I can buy a gun and walk around with it concealed in my belt or drawers. NBD. No one wants that.
Defense. Rebounds.
Re: Violence
Yea. I mean, of course there are steps that can be taken. It was more just pointing out that the whole "if they want to find a way, they will (those motivated, criminal or otherwise)....jhawks99 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:35 pmI have no idea other than to limit magazine capacity. When that, logical, argument is applied to guns people on here call it crazy talk. Despite it being normal and accepted on multiple other issues across numerous platforms.

Re: Violence
I would like to see publicly funded elections. With free airtime on the major networks for real (not attack ads) equal time for both parties or even a 3rd. And no privately funded ads.
I know that ain't gonna happen.

Re: Violence
I like this and have suggested as much. Policy only. No demonization.
Re: Violence
Unfortunately the First Amendment issues may be raised. Having said that SCOTUS said that Congress can enact disclosure laws and they would be Constitutional, in the Citizens United case.
The comparison to regulation of firearms is specious , at best
Re: Violence
Interesting thing about money in politics is to see if it's going to change sides, now that Dems are starting to bring in more of that corporate money.

Re: Violence
Define "publicly funded". As in my tax dollars will pay for it? And you feel that TV networks should be required to donate their airtime to elections? Just nationally or for all elected positions? My local city council person gets free airtime on CBS?
