We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
I would celebrate the fuck out of Yom Kippur, if it was a federal holiday.
Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
Easter is a more important religious holiday in the Christian faith. It is not a federal holiday and I'd argue, that while it does have some secular traditions and celebrations: Easter eggs, baskets, etc. It hasn't done so to the extent that Christmas has.

You would fast and remain in prayer all day, while wearing white, and go to synagogue?

If they’d let me in.
Otherwise, I’d just spend the day PMing gutter back and forth.

Yeah, I’m not big on peebers.
Too bready for me.
If I want something that’s gonna sit in my gut like a brick, I’d rather just drink craft beers.
Otherwise, for the sake of my gut, and of the fact it’s been so damn hot and dry here, light beer. preferably in a bottle, it just hits different. Especially when served on ice…like 6 at a time…in a bucket…

In our area public schools get Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah off
Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
When I lived in CT they did too. Because there are a lot more Jewish people there, but they (in my experience) celebrated it as a religious holiday and the gentiles just had the day off school they didn't dye eggs or go on sleigh rides.
Ousdahl wants to make an argument, (based on what he's posted) that the US makes Christian holidays into federal holidays, but that really isn't the case, as is evident by the holiest holiday not being treated as a federal holiday, and Christmas is only because it's become a secular and cultural holiday in addition to being a religious one.
It's a matter of pragmatism. Nearly everyone in the US celebrates Christmas, at least in some form, regardless of faith. We celebrate the new year on Jan. 1 not as a nod to Pope Gregory who introduced the Gregorian calendar, but because that's the calendar Americans, and most of the world, use. Sure, it started out based on religion, but it's not anymore. So, he can try and play "gotcha" by pointing out that we don't use the chinese calendar, or Buddhist calendar to celebrate the new year, but it isn't for religious reasons...at least not in the past several hundred years.

Do you think Christmas would have become a secular holiday on its own, if not for being a religious holiday first?
Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
And it is always celebrated on a Sunday, when the vast majority of federal institutions are already closed.
Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
97% of people. We've been over this.

Re: We Lost the Battle for the Republican Party’s Soul Long Ago
No.
But that's irrelevant in 2021.
You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.
If Ramadan becomes a thing where Americans all go on diets and work out daily in like intense ways, and then at the end of the 40 days we celebrate with a Rock-esque cheat meal, I'm in.
But, until then, there's no reason it should be a federal holiday.
