Perhaps an entry level worker could have a better chance of buying a home if they were paid more of a living wage, rather than having their wages suppressed for the benefit of shareholder dividends?
That’s the thing about Merica - we’d collectively rather tell workers they don’t deserve to buy property, so that we can let shareholders afford million dollar vacation homes instead.

Nobody is forced to work at McDonalds.
Nobody is forced to eat at McDonalds.
Don't like their practices? Don't work there or support their business. It's not rocket science.

Re: Strikes
Once again, your issue doesn't appear to be with how/why someone ends up with their only employment opportunity being a McDonalds entry level position.
Your real issue is that someone somewhere has more of something and that's not fair.

Re: Strikes
I’ll admit, I did try their new chicken sammich the other day. Not bad. The spicy sauce was actually kinda spicy.
Re: Strikes
Full time residents are definitely getting squeezed out in CO vacation markets. There simply isn't as much available to full time residents like there was in the days before vrbo, airbnb, etc... Many investors are finding that they make far more money on a house if they rent it out to vacationers a handful of times a year than if they rent it all yea long to a resident. And the impact of reduced immigration has hit the CO home building market hard. There just aren't enough workers to make it an affordable venture to build lower priced homes.ousdahl wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 10:13 am I live in a resort market though. It’s overwhelmingly second homes.
So it’s difficult to find a single family home for under a mil here any more. Winter Park used to be the anti-Vail, but now it’s just Vail 2.0.
I’m competing with Texans who can afford to drop 7 figures on their vacation spot. They used to only be up here for 2 weeks a year, but now they’re up here for 2 weeks plus rent it out on Airbnb the rest of the year.
I could maybe get like a small condo, but then I’m also looking at like $500 a month in HOA fees
Re: Strikes
But that is much of my issue.
How or why does someone’s only employment opportunity end up being McDonald’s?
How can such a big successful corporation’s business model depend so heavily on not paying living wages?

Who is arguing that people are forced to work at McDonald’s?
Re: Strikes
Decent example. Complaining about money, but instead of getting the spicy mcchicken thats $1, you go premium chicken sandwhich that is 5x as much and not much more food.

Re: Strikes
You should actually look into what you're talking about.
My quick research shows McDonalds actually pays their employees pretty well.
Re: Strikes
I have a student doing research with me who works at Wal-Mart when she goes home. I told her, with so many places struggling to find help, that she really should ask for a raise. She said, "yeah, I should, I've only gotten one raise in 3 years."
That's what I have a problem with even more than a low starting wage. The expectation among those who defend lower starting wages is that you get raises and promotions. If you aren't giving those, than I can't really defend lower wages. And, I'm not sure how you address that problem, other than people leaving shitty jobs for better ones.

We could complain on Kcrim more often...or "like" posts on reddit? Would that help?

Sorry, that wasnt constructive. But neither are discussions with Ostriches.

Or perhaps they should recognize it as "entry" level and not a career. It's not about not deserving anything. No one just "deserves" to buy a house. That's a weird assumption of entitlement without the subsequent achievement of attaining what is necessary to do it. Do you truly feel that everyone "deserves" to buy a home in America regardless of their current income?ousdahl wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 10:36 am Well, particularly with McDonald’s (eg a giant global corporation and not just some mom and pop), the question is one of wealth distribution.

A hot topic of discussion here is on local housing issues.twocoach wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 10:43 amFull time residents are definitely getting squeezed out in CO vacation markets. Local gummints are trying to build local housing, impose taxes short term rentals to pay for it, etc.
But there’s all these folks like THIS WOULDNT BE A PROBLEM IF WE’D JUST LET THE FREE MARKET WORK ITS WONDERS
And it’s like, actually no, the free market is precisely what created this housing crisis.
Re: Strikes
It isn't. And people need to stop thinking it is.
If you're an adult and McD's was the only place that will hire you, you need to either get promoted to management fairly quickly, or you need to use your work experience to help you get a job that is better.
Having worked at a job, any job, can often be the difference in getting hired at a place that pays $15 an hour....and then you do the same thing at that job to get the one that pays $18.50.
That's not a perfect system and I'm not arguing it shouldn't be changed, but that is the case, and if you've been working at minimum wage at the same place for years...then you did it wrong and you need to be actively seeking out better employment.

Re: Strikes
If only there were some statistics that showed the number of working adults (i.e. 18-65) in the USA versus current jobs that pay more that $15.
