F the NCAA

Henry Ts logo on the back of Jalen Wilson's jersey.
Re: F the NCAA
The next step be, "why make them enroll in classes?"
And then I will be done.
And then I will be done.
I only came to kick some ass...
Rock the fucking house and kick some ass.
Rock the fucking house and kick some ass.
Re: F the NCAA
Watch out--illy is warming up his fingers to type, "they dont really go to class now".
Re: F the NCAA
No. I am with you guys on a lot of this stuff. Seems like a lose lose situation. But I'd rather lean towards doing what is most fair for the athletes (workers?) than keeping status quo of backroom deals and the real wealth staying in the hands of the very few (*ousdahl voice*).
Like you said, the only real answer is get the money out of college sports. But then you lose the elite coaches and players and the NCAA has to give up their riches, which they don't want to do either.....AND you also lose every single sport other than mens basketball and football at most schools. a few select schools will have some baseball golf etc...but not as many as there are now.
I am hoping it doesn't become too big of a change to the spirit of college sports. You fear a worst case and i understand why...but the situation we are currently in is the polar opposite end of the spectrum worst case scenario. So something has to give and it appears to courts are forcing their hand.
Re: F the NCAA
If you are talking to me ( and phd ), no, internships are great. In a sense, a college player is getting a highly paid internship. ( room/board, tuition, training, coaching, press, stipend etc )
Re: F the NCAA
It's not highly paid in relation to the billions of revenue generated solely off those "interns" on court product.
Re: F the NCAA
Nah i wasnt talking to you, that was more for the jfish and cnb and illy view.
I like College Basketball
Just Ledoux it

Are internships unfair...or are they part of showcasing yourself and resume building to get the job you want?BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:11 am It's not highly paid in relation to the billions of revenue generated solely off those "interns" on court product.

Re: F the NCAA
This is sorta tangential, but isn’t contempt for internships a tenet of Ayn Rand-ian personal economic belief?

Thousands of kids every year come from all over the country, and other countries, and pay to go to KU, no scholarship, and love it.NDballer13 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 4:16 pm
You can go back to the days with Phog on the bench, do you really believe kids were coming in from all over the country, and other countries, with the attitude of "I can't wait to play my heart out and represent this university that up until a few months ago I had absolutely no connection to."?
Why is it hard to imagine a kid from out of state seeing KU do well on ESPN/CBS, getting good enough to play for a college, and have Bill Self call them, visit the campus, and get a full ride to a prestigious basketball program, and be excited about it?
Re: F the NCAA
The problem is that in this internship the only people creating the value are the interns...that is a big part of the issue (legally) it seems.TDub wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:20 amAre internships unfair...or are they part of showcasing yourself and resume building to get the job you want?BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:11 am It's not highly paid in relation to the billions of revenue generated solely off those "interns" on court product.

Do you feel less proud of a marketing wiz who attends/graduates from KU, but who is paid to work part time for a major marketing firm and is making money while also going to school?pdub wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:28 amThousands of kids every year come from all over the country, and other countries, and pay to go to KU, no scholarship, and love it.NDballer13 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 4:16 pm

Re: F the NCAA
That is a flawed argument.
There is plenty of value when attending a university.
Otherwise there wouldn't be universities.

Is an intern forbidden from having a different part time job on the side to make some money, if they choose to?TDub wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:20 amAre internships unfair...or are they part of showcasing yourself and resume building to get the job you want?BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:11 am It's not highly paid in relation to the billions of revenue generated solely off those "interns" on court product.
Is it possible to agree with both sides on this debate? I disagree with those comparing it to modern day slavery and imply these athletes are living in poverty, but I agree with the side that they aren't getting their fair piece of the pie.
Music students are allowed to make their own music. Science students are allowed to use labs for their own experiments. Drama students can act in and edit their own films and videos. And so on, while being able to profit of their work. Why is that OK, but a basketball player can't give a shout out to the Salty Iguana for a few hundred bucks?
Re: F the NCAA
Sure. And what the courts appear to be saying is that the value some athletes receiving is not a in line with the revenue those athletes are generating...and also that the NCAA doesn't get to operate above the law because of their "rules".
Re: F the NCAA
And i'm arguing that to counter that, the NCAA aims to make college sports less about a money making engine and more like what it was originally intended.
Re: F the NCAA
Yes. That would be ideal.
But unfortunately that's not what the NCAA wants. They don't want to lose their cash cows. They want ALL the money for themselves and their interests.

Re: F the NCAA
That's not hard to imagine. I was 100% that kid. On the other hand, why is it hard to imagine a kid like Svi didn't give two shits about KU until he received a call one day saying he could play there in front of NBA scouts every day? I'm not saying he did or didn't care, just using him as an example because I don't think it's that far fetched that a kid growing up in the Ukraine doesn't care about colleges in midwest America.pdub wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:28 amThousands of kids every year come from all over the country, and other countries, and pay to go to KU, no scholarship, and love it.NDballer13 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 4:16 pm
