Typically the units are placed in the wall above a window and the head units are placed in the corner of the balcony (apartment buildings) or below the windows (ground floor). The lines are thus very short, although they can be an eyesore for any front facing rooms.

Typically? Theres nothing typical about them and certainly above a window is not where they are typically placed. The only thing typical is that the head units are outside and low, just like a traditional unit, unless its more than a 4 head unit then they are stacked on racks and hidden behind fencing enclosure.


The lines are not visible, they are run through attic space or wall space....which is why if you have a failure they can be troublesome to locate the point of failure.

Ive never had an HVAC contractor that wanted to put them above a window. The soace is cramped, the linesets dont like tight bends/cant do tight bends. And you have to interrupt your cripples to make room, structurally thats a poor decision. You have to add more support around them to make up for no crips and it further congests the space.

By “typical” I was referring to the installation in South Asia, where walls are masonry (literally bricks and mortar, covered with cement plaster). No attic or crawl space in residences, especially apartment buildings. They literally plop a unit outside and run the lines in conduits at the highest point of the outside wall

Well we dont live in SE Asia. Im not sure how thats relevant here. Sonce you were discussing it as an option for your place I was assuming we were talking in the US. Forgive me for not maling that jump.

I would also suggest that you couldn't put it directly above a window in a CMU building here either as thats where the bond beams typically run.

After I graduated from KU, I moved into a house with a buddy on the west Plaza (small bungalow) and it didn't have central air, just a couple window units. My bedroom would stay reasonably cool and we had one in the main dining room area, but the kitchen and bathroom downstairs would be saunas. I generally took a cold shower in the morning to avoid sweating immediately after getting out of the shower. It was an annoyance, but much better than not having any a/c.

The apocalypse broke out in Omaha while we were in Lawrence. Early Saturday morning we had straight line winds of 70+ mph with gusts over 90mph. Had several large branches fall and rip our power line away from the pole so we are in Day Two of no power. We have the dangerous broken limbs cleared, just need to get power restored and then the tree crew will come back next week and clear out the remaining broken tree limbs. Good times.

Day three of no power. Had to go in to the office anyways so brought a backpack full of stuff to charge while here. Only 36,000 without power still, down from a peak of 180,000+ so it feels like we should be getting fixed sooner rather than later. Ugh.

Broke the record for most rainfall in a single day in July on Sunday and then it rained again on Monday.
