I don't feel insulted. I have no idea what you're even trying to get at with this one.
F the NCAA
Re: F the NCAA
At the end of the day, to want pure amateurism and also big-time college sports is to either desire or accept the disproportionate exploitativeness of pure amateurism.
To your credit, pdub (and I'm serious), you seem to be ok with losing the big-time college sports aspect of things. That's fine as far as it goes, I guess.
I'm not ok with losing the big-time college sports aspect of things, so I'm good with ditching amateurism as a way to save big-time college sports.

"You've been clear on it, sure, but being consistently silly doesn't make you less silly.
The changes will only ruin college sports for those who let them ruin college sports."
Liking what i believe college sports was and can be isn't silly to me. It is to you. Marking it as a definite fact that it is silly is saying how I feel about college sports is a lesser opinion of what you think it should be. You want money dictating everything--thats your deal, it's very much engrained in what you do as a living--i dont value the same thing.
If college sports suddenly went the opposite direction and the federal courts sided with them and money left instead of swamped the sport, I wouldn't say to you, "the changes to college sports will only ruin college sports for those who let it", I'd say, "I get its not your thing, so maybe it's not for you anymore".
You're just a smug person now and to me, it sucks, because I used to value your opinion.

So maybe dont lead with, "you're silly, and either you are calling attention to yourself or are fine with exploitation".jfish26 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 12:41 pm

Re: F the NCAA
To be clear, what's silly is the idea that you can have pure amateurism in big-time college sports, without exploitation. That simply isn't possible. Either amateurism goes or big-time goes, or you can't not have the exploitation.pdub wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 12:43 pm "You've been clear on it, sure, but being consistently silly doesn't make you less silly.

If you don't require college sports to be big-time, then there's nothing silly about your position at all.
I have no problem saying that I would stop following college basketball if the quality of hoop (and hooper) was substantially worse than it is today (with all the follow-on effects of that). That would be me letting the changes ruin college basketball for me, guilty.
Re: F the NCAA
Then, to borrow from what you did earlier, either 1. you haven't been following my ( and others ) arguments for years 2. are intentionally being an asshole or 3. are dense or incredibly forgetful.
Re: F the NCAA
Well, what I first said was silly was the suggestion that a free market would ruin college sports. I do think that is silly, so I stand by that. I also recognize it's subjective, so maybe it's not silly to you.
That said - if money in college sports ruins it for you, I'm not sure what you're doing here. This isn't new.

The new rules will allow athletes to profit by monetizing social media accounts, signing autographs, teaching camps or lessons, starting their own businesses, and participating in advertising campaigns, among many other potential ventures. Athletes will be allowed to sign with agents or other representatives to help them acquire endorsement deals.
Some opportunities will be restricted, but the types of restrictions will vary based on state laws and policies created by individual schools. For example, some but not all state laws prohibit athletes from endorsing alcohol, tobacco or gambling products. Some but not all laws prohibit athletes from using their school's logos or other copyright material in endorsements.

I have not read the state laws, but the bans on alcohol, tobacco, and gambling seem vulnerable on first glance.

We're more likely to get Och AND Jalen back now...so that makes me happy.
