Totally random thread

It was hot out there, but not that hot.

Re: Totally random thread
Branson (and Bezos) getting a lot of shit today. People feel there are more important things these guys should be doing with their money. If they weren't generous guys I might jump on that bandwagon but I say they can and should do as they please with their money.
Right on cue,
I have a somewhat wealthy friend who posted this....
Wanna go to space? Yeah! that will be 250k! Done! Just so you know, people on the earth that are homeless and have no food, sign here. What's that? The asshole clause. Have a nice trip, asshole.
This was my response to him......
I like you Rob but let's look at the big picture here. Branson does more good for the world than 90+% of other people on this planet. As far as other wealthy people, if they give much of their money to charitable causes you take issue with them paying 250K to do as they please?

Re: Totally random thread
I suspect Bezos' and Branson's egos will survive the snark sent their way.
But I am sure they appreciate your support.

Re: Totally random thread
while i begrudge no one for spending their own money how they choose, this all just seems kinda silly while in the midst of global climate and biodiversity crises
Re: Totally random thread
I wonder if Bezos has a nice solid gold toilet in his spaceship, or if he plans to just take one of the standard issue Amazon Employee Piss Jugs.

us regular folks cannot relate. us regular folks are busy living, dying, raising, earning, laughing, loving.
we don't give this sort of stuff much thought.

what part of the economy is that money getting pumped into, specifically?
edit: do you think Bezos/Amazon or Branson/Virgin are hurting economically?

I assume they aren't flapping their wings to get into space. Did some machinist built their craft? Did anyone pilot it? Have a ground crew? Fill it with gas?TraditionKU wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 3:15 pmloltwocoach wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 3:11 pmPeople pumping $250k a pop into the economy is silly? Re: Totally random thread
1) there are parts of the economy that would benefit more from those investments
2) investing in our environment and/or conservation of the natural world has benefits far beyond economic ones, but those investments also benefit the economy in a much more lasting way

Virgin Galactic has 800+ employees whom I assume are not all billionaires. I also assume thatany hundreds of others also earn their living based on the success of Virgin Galactic. If some rich dipshit wants to pay $250k so those employees can work and pay for their lives, that's cool with me.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 3:19 pmgas? loltwocoach wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 3:18 pmI assume they aren't flapping their wings to get into space. Re: Totally random thread
and honestly, twocoach, you can illy-argue with me all you want, but you’re not going to convince me that this variety of space travel is warranted when we can’t take care of the planet we’ve got

those employees were there, and will likely continue to be there regardless of these flights
