Nike released these shoes on Saturday.

The Nike store in Chicago has been "sand bagging" them. Didn't sell them on Saturday, Sunday or yesterday.
I 100% know they have them in the store because I have seen them (in the boxes) that they were unpacking and the manager told me they have them but won't release them until some time this week.
I have stood in line an hour before the store has opened with many other people on Saturday, Sunday, and yesterday (see photo below of yesterday) - only to be denied an opportunity to purchase the shoes.
The retail price is $170 + tax (for the adult sizes) and I believe $130 + tax for the kids sizes - and the shoes are currently re-selling for about $450 in adult sizes and $400 in kids sizes.
Needless to say, a LOT of people are wanting to buy them to sell.
The Nike store doesn't open until 11:00am but people line up long before that.

All that being said, TODAY I have a work "check in" Zoom meeting at 11:00am. It's basically a worthless meeting. Bunch of people saying nothing important.
My dilemma is that I feel there is a good chance the Nike Store releases the shoes today.
Of course my job should take precedence but.... Let's be real. I could stand in line for an hour or so to get what I refer to as a free $500. No brainer. Right?
So..... I could either lie and say I have a doctor's appointment, tell the truth and my guess is be reprimanded, or just sit at home and do the Zoom meeting and miss out on my free $500.
What to do?

Line at 10:45am yesterday.

Do you not have the ability to call in to the zoom meeting audio without video? We use webex and if I have a conflict such as having to take my kid to school in the morning, I can just write down the call in info and the conference code and call in to the meeting on my phone.

That is/was a good question. The answer is yes and something I was considering but I am the douche who commented the last Zoom meeting that we should have a requirement that either everybody is video or nobody is video (and it's just audio - phone).
It all worked out yesterday because the meeting host had to cancel but the Nike store didn't release THOSE shoes. They released others that have no real resale value.
I'm hoping they release the Jordan's today but it's looking like rain and I don't feel like standing outside in the rain for an hour - to MAYBE get them.

On a related note, the meeting host scheduled an all-day (disaster recovery review/s) Zoom conference for April 7th. April 7th I have to take my mother to the suburb/s to meet with her lawyer and sign her new Will. Therefore, I do have a legitimate excuse for that.

Interesting read. My firm has started a flexible work policy. Fortunately I am lucky to have been approved to work from home the majority of the week this Summer. I will begin going to the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting tomorrow.

That said, we have a CEO who is empathetic and has embraced the situation. On the flip side we have some folks in positions of power who don’t really give a crap and want you back at your desk.

To that I say: Wake up. This pandemic has forever changed how we work.

For the last month I have had an entire office meant for 50 people all to myself. It's great.

Our company had ANOTHER extensive employee "survey" in regards to a "return to work" strategy.
Problem is, whatever they decide and instill, it will NEVER be the same as it was and some/many people will be unhappy.
Heck, a major obstacle right off the bat is being fully vaccinated is a requirement to return to the office.
I know of at least 3 major players in the company that are NOT fully vaccinated nor do they plan to be come September. My guess is there are several if not many more of the 350+ we employ in Chicago and the 150 or so others we employ in other offices around the world.

Then we have how many days a week will an employee be in the office and how many days will they work from home. What days will those be? What if 90% to those who work in a particular department want let's say Mondays and Fridays working from home and how do you determine who gets what days?
There are a lot of other obstacles that need to be addressed.
It's a gigantic cluster fuck. The new norm is going to be full of abnormalities.

If I could make as much money doing something else such re-selling sneakers and streetwear, I would quit and work for myself. My guess is there will be a small/considerable percentage of former "office workers" in many fields who will do just that - quit and work other jobs that don't require them to be in an office 5 days a week. It will be very difficult for some people to go back from working 0 days a week in an office to working 5 days a week in an office. I assume I will be one of those people. I'm not looking forward to it but I am very thankful and fortunate to have a job that pays me well and has paid me for working from home the past year and half.

Well, how'd the flight go? No fights on the plane? Nobody had to be duct-taped to a seat?

How was FL in gen'l?

just curious...

I got back from Florida a few weeks ago. It's fine there. Yes, there are zero masks and zero precautions. But mostly everyone in a good mood.

No fights, too many kids on board.

Plane was packed. Orlando airport was packed. You can tell FL has been opened for awhile, I get the sense that people care less there.

My company is still reviewing "best practices" and what most employees want. I think it will be a mix of WFH and office.

I've bought 2 new monitors, a re-furnished docking station for my work laptop and splitters for dual monitors. In the next few months, I'll need to return my work monitors and docking station, so I want the same setup at home so I can just dock/re-dock my laptop. We have to pay for our own equipment if we opt to WFH part-time. I figured I spent $500 for everything, so not bad.

I broke down and bought a Herman Miller Aeron drafting chair last Summer. Best decision of the work from home-era I’ve made.

I bought a office chair last summer as well, but it's not nearly as nice as yours, but it's functional. Kind of has an annoying creak when I move, but it works. Also bought a lumbar support pad for the back and that has helped a lot.

I have a feeling my employer is going to tighten up Covid protocol at our office again.

They loosened them in hopes of encouraging more people to come back. It hasn’t worked.

We are still getting emails from HR from people who have come to our office with Covid symptoms. Completely irresponsible…

This last week it was someone who sits on my floor (the only details we get is what floor they sit on), fortunately I was out of the office traveling.

I’ve been going in 2 times a week, but this continues to be incredibly frustrating. If they start requiring masks again, I’m staying home.

Hey man, that's like....their choice....err something.

Why would you care? Don't make it political. It's ok if people ignore science and make up lies so that they can disagree with you. Quit being scared.

Office rules are changing...

-Unvaxed must wear mask 100% of the time, 0 exception.
-Vaxed must wear mask if office is located in a Covid hotspot as defined by the CDC (pretty much all are), unless you are able to social distance while in the office.
-Vaxed who do not submit proof of vaccination to the company must wear mask at all times, 0 exceptions.

We got a similar email from our HR, except they also said that 99% of our company employees are vaccinated. I wonder who the 1-2 a$$holes are (we have about 160 employees).
