I think you have mentioned in the past that your or your family has experience in the sport. Something I don't know but could easily find out: do bad scores from a team member drag down the rest of the team's score?
If so, an even easier decision to sit it out.
Ice skating in my house but we pay attention to Gymnastics as well.
In the team competition, each country gets 2 athletes per apparatus (beam, floor, uneven bar & vault). Most combined points on the 8 total performances wins. If Biles tanks the ones she is doing, the team has little chance to medal. Because she stepped aside, one of the other US teammates took her rotations. They stepped up and earned a silver medal.
There is also an individual all around after the team portion, where 2 US athletes (based on scoring in the earlier qualifying rounds) compete on their own for the overall gold and the highest three scores on each individual apparatus also win medals. Since Biles also withdrew from the individual portion, her teammate gets to take her place.
