Never heard of him.TDub wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 1:27 pmHad you heard of Bryce Young before he went to Alabama? Would Bryce youngs "fans" be his fans if he was at Wyoming? What percentage of those fans are fans because he wears a script A on his hat
They're his fans because he is Alabama's QB. But that's okay. He won't be wearing Alabama gear in the commercials. And it doesn't appear their signing him was tied to him committing to Alabama. Which would be against the rules.
Re: F the NCAA
But I thought this was about profiting off of name image a likeness....not profiting off the schools name, image, and likeness.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 4:39 pmNever heard of him.

there are some obvious cases, but aside from these you’re never going to be able to tease apart the two (player/school)

It's the players NIL that they are singing. Like i said, he won't be wearing Alabama gear...but he's recognizable because he's the Alabama QB.TDub wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:04 pmBut I thought this was about profiting off of name image a likeness....not profiting off the schools name, image, and likeness.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 4:39 pmNever heard of him.

I know what you're saying. If he was the Southern IL Carbondale QB he wouldn't be getting signed to deals like this. But the rules state that as long as NIL isn't tied to committing to a school then it is legal. The Alabama fan base makes him valuable. The school doesn't own their fan base. It's a perk.
Re: F the NCAA
Wow. 5million followers already!?!? I have no problem with him getting money. And it's not tied to committing to a certain school because he may not even go to college.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:09 pm https://www.espn.com/high-school/story/ ... tball-star

These are the .1% ers of college sports athletes. Alabama QB, dude above, etc. Way more Mitch Lightfoots doing local business ads for a couple hundred than players making millions.

which is as it should be, imoBasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:13 pmWow. 5million followers already!?!? I have no problem with him getting money. Agreed. Part of the reason i was glad the rules changed is because it appeared our staff was having trouble following the old rules. I think they will be able to follow the new rules and now Adidas doesn't have to worry about trying to steer guys to KU. If our future elite recruits want money they can now get it legally. It's a win win imo..
Re: F the NCAA
Your naive if you believe this wont reault in even larger sums if money being steered toward players to influence choices.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:23 pmAgreed. Maybe. But it won't need to be done by our coaching staff.TDub wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:27 pmYour naive if you believe this wont reault in even larger sums if money being steered toward players to influence choices.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 5:23 pmAgreed. Right now i can only go off of what is actually happening. And right now it doesn't look like it's tied to steering players. Most of the players getting paid are already established at their school or have large followings already in HS.
Suni Lee the gymnast who won gold last night is going to make millions. She's already going to attend Auburn..that future money has nothing to do with attending Auburn. It's because she is now a household name.
Re: F the NCAA
I think the idea was good in a naive way. I am wondering about how bad the corruption side of this will become. A sponsor pushing athletes to do certain things in a game. Threatening some rivals. The results rarely meet the good intentions. Amplified bad behavior that was already in the sport is assured.
Re: F the NCAA
That can happen without NIL.Sparko wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 6:46 pm I think the idea was good in a naive way. I am wondering about how bad the corruption side of this will become. With NIL most of that would not only be against the rules, it would be illegal. And those people could end up in jail.

No way!!

Re: F the NCAA
That's just not how legalization and regulation works, though. There isn't more illicit weed growing and selling where weed is legalized. There isn't more illicit bookmaking where sports betting is legalized.Sparko wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 6:46 pm I think the idea was good in a naive way. Re: F the NCAA
Seems like IARP won’t have as much final say as it was when it was set up. Initial thoughts seems like not great news for Kansas.

They still have the final say; they will just be handcuffed on doing their own investigation of the cases that are assigned to them unless they can prove why the additional investigation is warranted and will be asked to provide an estimated timeline so that they aren't blasted for taking forever.NewtonHawk11 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 6:57 am Seems like IARP won’t have as much final say as it was when it was set up. From the article:
Independent Accountability Resolution Process
The board also approved an immediate change to the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, made at the recommendation of the Independent Accountability Oversight Committee. The Complex Case Unit will accept the investigative work of the enforcement staff unless the unit can demonstrate a compelling reason why additional investigation is required.
Additionally, the board approved a request to allow case timelines to be developed and published for each case in the independent process. This change will provide transparency and improve credibility.
The oversight committee, which has expressed concerns about the delay in the resolution of cases referred to the independent process, determined that much of the delay is the result of efforts by the Complex Case Unit to "re-investigate" cases that the enforcement staff thoroughly investigated. Accepting the enforcement staff's results will speed the process significantly without compromising the goals of the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, committee members think.
The changes are effective immediately.
