COVID-19 - On the Ground
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
This from the conclusions section which i found interesting and a positive sign as we learn to continue life with covid...
"In early October 2020, the WHO also publicly announced that projections show COVID-19 to be fatal for approximately 0.14% of those who become ill—compared to 0.10% for endemic influenza—again a figure far lower than expected"

So how much “voter verification” is appropriate if it also has the effect of “voter suppression?”randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:28 pm"Voter restriction" is a propoganda term for "voter verification"
Say verification measures effectively prevent 100 voters from otherwise voting fraudulently. Is that a worthy initiative if it also effectively makes it more difficult, if not completely prevents, say, 1000 otherwise eligible voters from voting?
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
And dangit this is both completely off topic and the completely wrong bored.
Oh well.
At least I got to gloat about GOP politicians dying of covid while I could!

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
You need ID to do anything in this world nowadays. Rent a house, buy cigarettes, get a credit card, etc. Why would voting be any different? Its kind of fucked to assume minorities aren't able to get themselves an ID
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
since when is this just about IDs?randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:34 pm You need ID to do anything in this world nowadays. Rent a house, buy cigarettes, get a credit card, etc. Why would voting be any different? Its kind of fucked to assume minorities aren't able to get themselves an ID

I just hope Randy doesn’t have to wait in line too long to vote.
Wait! I mean, if Randy does wait in line too long to vote, I just hope no one offers him a drink of water.

And if people think voter ID laws is just to suppress minorities (which is fucked up to assume minorities can't afford an ID), then why don't we just write off getting a free ID on the taxpayers. This country has a budget in the trillions it would barely be noticed. And we don't seem to care about debt anyways

Any examples or just making up numbers?ousdahl wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:31 pmSo how much “voter verification” is appropriate if it also has the effect of “voter suppression?”randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:28 pm"Voter restriction" is a propoganda term for "voter verification"

I am all for voter verification. We verify identity for TONS of other less important tasks.
I quickly show an ID to buy white clawz for beaverfever and i to drink. They scan my ID at the weed store. It's no problem. If they want to scan an ID to vote then have at it. It is very easy to get an ID/DL.
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
I get the sentiment. And I don’t understand how more folks don’t have ID.randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:34 pm You need ID to do anything in this world nowadays. You might be able to sneak a fake ID at the Quik Trip to score a pack of smokes. But to get a credit card? Or for that matter, to vote?
You need a fake ID, fake legit address, fake social security number, fake entire identity that otherwise looks real in gummint records. It’s incredibly difficult.
And in the context of voting, fraudulently doing so is incredibly rare. You can’t just waltz up to the ballot box and cast a bunch of bullshit votes using McLovin as your alias.
Now this clearly belongs on the pols bored.
Or, if you’d prefer, the QT thread
…sucka.

106 restrictive voting bills introduced among 28 states
that leaves 78 bills that aren’t about requiring IDs

Who else on here does?
Meanwhile, I do agree 100% that voters should have to show ID to vote.
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
The real issue isn't identification, it is the GOP legislatures taking over for local election boards and declaring victory. That has always been the key issue. For anyone thinking this would not happen, see 2020, Arizona and every other close state.
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
Wow, it’s news to me that all these bills requiring ID also added several days of early voting with extended hours and convenient locations to drop off ballots, especially in neighborhoods with large non-white population. I’m also very grateful that Republican legislatures streamlined the process for obtaining and returning ballots by mail, if one desired! Thanks randy for the helpful information.randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:36 pm And if people think voter ID laws is just to suppress minorities (which is fucked up to assume minorities can't afford an ID), then why don't we just write off getting a free ID on the taxpayers. This virus is hanging around and mutating thanks to unvaccinated people.
This doesn't change anything.

Sorry, but how is 0.14% possible?BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:16 pm This from the conclusions section which i found interesting and a positive sign as we learn to continue life with covid...

630,000 people have died in the US. For the fatality rate to be 0.14% you would need 450 million infections. That's like 100 million more infections than there are people.
