The ICU beds at the hospital where Mrs 99 works are filling up with folks with covid from Alabama cuz there's no room there.

These headlines were one-above-the-other on the KC Star's website yesterday:

Show goes on: Garth Brooks holds concert at sold-out Arrowhead Stadium amid COVID surge

'On the precipice of becoming Springfield [Mo.]': KC metro adds nearly 750 more COVID cases

Our government/s and the CDC pretty much demonstrate their ignorance on a daily basis too.
My issue is that there are too many unknowns and too many misleading things being said and done - and not done.
Why is to ok to have Lollapalooza, Garth Brooks, Sturgis, etc., but it's not ok to have events such as an outdoor music fest in SF and Jazz Fest in NO?

none of those events are “OK” in my mind

it’s not the CDC’s fault they happened

also, it’s lazy to conflate “government” with the CDC. the CDC lays out guidelines based on scientific evidence. the federal government does little re: covid...state and more local governments decide whether or not they want to follow CDC guidelines. at least here in Utah, state government is often at odds with both the CDC and state healthcare officials’ guidelines

some have decided that “freedom” and a little bit of economic prosperity (no matter how short-lived) is more important than public health...altruism and any semblance of a social contract have gone right out the door in order to satiate the selfish bitching coming from people like mich and randy

I am not particularly worries about outdoor events either. That many people that close together would still set off my personal alarm but I don't see it as a major problem.

No one said it isn't OK to have Jazz Fest in NO. The organizers chose not to hold it due to their own concerns. Events in NO seem to inevitably end with tens of thousands crawling from one indoor bar to another so that may be the difference between that and a concert at an outdoor football stadium. Oh, and the fact that the delta variant is raging through Louisiana right now.

the bolded is what makes it throwing caution to the wind

couple that with the trends that we’re seeing nationally, and it’s just a stupid and unnecessary risk

too many are too eager to turn the page

I was in NOLA in June for work and Bourbon Street and much of the French Quarter was not safe.

I also don't think the Garth Brooks show this last weekend was safe.

I certainly wont be going to any Garth Brooks concerts or Sturgis because neither are something I would enjoy without the pandemic going on.

But honestly, when AFH opens I will be packing my ass in there, wearing a mask and crossing my fingers. And if anyone in front of me yells at me for yelling for the Jayhawks, they can kiss my ass and go home where they are more comfortable.

Same. At this point, my family and I did our part. With vax, I am doing pretty much everything I want. Wearing a mask where required because I'm not a snowflake. Distancing, of course--this is common sense stuff.

There are still some places that are taking obvious risks that I won't be around. Lolla and Garth being towards the top.
