Open practice reports from things I read from people who were there.

Kendrick seemed to be most complete QB. Impressive command of offense and made the right reads.

JD threw a pick 6. Hit footwork is atrocious. Last year might have broke him.

Bean is a string bean. But has flashes of good things, but doesn’t make the right reads all the time.

Secondary looked solid.

RB group is loaded. Gardner is the best of the bunch. But all 4 are really good.

Also, they did a coaches interview on the video board and Leipold was PISSED about it. From the feedback, to the stopping to have to do it and many other things. He just wants to coach. That’s it.

And I noticed this last night from videos at the KU kickoff event. Leipold is terrible at public speaking. He stumbles a bit, quiet, and seems to have some anxiety with it, so it’s a good thing he can really coach.

Win-win with me. I hate coach's interviews.

The reports from Saturday is that Bean is clearly in 3rd for QB's. I'm not surprised given the circumstances and when he committed, I thought we were assuming too much for him to be a better option than Daniels.

They also had as scrimmage last night so hopefully we start to hear some reports come out now that we're nearing halfway through fall camp, but I agree, everything we've read so far seems like Bean is 3rd in this race. I guess he's fast and athletic but the concern is he's not grasping the offense as quickly as some would have hoped. What worries me about Daniels are the reports that last year may have tanked his confidence. Zebrowski is trying to complete re-teach his footwork and things because he's apparently really nervous in the pocket now. We're getting another year of Miles Kendrick aren't we? Ugh.

Kendrick makes sense, tank the season, get the top draft pick.

Wait, there's no draft in college. Fuck.
I only came to kick some ass...

First: thanks for these updates--they are great. Second, Kendrick looked really good up till he was injured at Baylor a few years ago. He was a running QB with a quick delivery and escaped from the pocket and he seemed to be the guy we were looking for. KU's O-Line since that time has been epically bad. Mahomes even looked mortal behind a bad line. His reads of the defense have to be better than the other's. I am concerned by the picks in practice though. Judgement is lacking based on a ticking clock in these guy's heads. Still.

Wut?
Which season are we talking about?
Certainly not the one where he had the majority of his yards in the blowout v Rutgers.

Yeah it's probably right now Kendrick, Daniels and Bean. And the gap between 2 and 3 is quite large from what it seems.

That's unfortunate because I think Bean is the most talented guy, he just hasn't gotten it yet

Curious as to why you think this--maybe there is something I am missing.

I think Daniels's arm is quite something. Just needs to rein it in. I'd be surprisingly pleased if Bean can match Daniels's arm. Plus Jalon still isn't 19 years old.

Think Bean has the best arm/leg combo. Daniels has the best arm. Kendrick has the brains.

But man there was a game last year where Bean went like 13-17 for 210 with 13 rushes for 170 yards. You take that in a heartbeat.

I still like Daniels. It's a 1A/1B situation for me. I want the most talented guy that can beat you with arms and legs, and I think that's Bean. Daniels is really close.

But from reports I have read so far, last year scarred Daniels. His footwork is horrible, he's overthinking things and is a beat too late on a lot of his reads.

I think some of the high hopes for Bean were because he performed well in games for a team that's been far and away better than KU, regardless of how low we've set that bar recently.

I just don't put much stock into the North Texas stats without having any idea how Jalon would have played against that kind of competition. Similar recruits out of high school. I have seen Jalon's arm against P5, and it is worthy. The footwork and read stuff needs to be taught, but it can be taught. I thought Jalon gave up on the pocket too quickly, although pretty hard to blame him with his line.

If Bean is clearly the 3rd best option in a system that is new to all 3 QB's, QB's that all have FBS playing experience, that's not very encouraging. If he really is this big speed demon, then maybe slot or WR is more for him.

I still think Daniels is the best of that bunch but my personal feeling has just been that he would benefit from a redshirt season. He got thrown to the wolves last year behind the worst offensive line in college football history and now he's all messed up. I guess I was hoping Bean would be good enough to allow him that chance to sit and learn for a year.

On the bright side, I have heard plenty of good things about Easters and Hawley, and they are going to get proper redshirt seasons. Maybe they're the future. Maybe not. But if the offensive line this year improves with the influx of talent we got, the QB position should improve by default, at least a little.

I do feel that every QB on the roster has been given full opportunity to win the job. If after all this time it is Kendrick that wins the job because he's our best option to win games, what an indictment on the Beaty and Miles staffs.

Much how like Beaty didn’t give Carter Stanley any chance to succeed. Even after a good game by Stanley, Beaty told the media in the postgame presser something to the effect of I don’t know if I believe what was out there is sustainable or something like that.

In 2018 he ran the speed option really well and had gained some first downs running and was driving on Baylor when he was injured by the hard turf in Waco on a five yard gain. To that point he looked like a multi-weapon QB. Not since really, but you got 1.2 seconds to get rid of the ball after that season.

It will be interesting to see how well he is able to use his legs on rollouts and the like. I do think he's a serviceable athlete for the position. Just wasn't placed in positions to succeed from 2019 and beyond. 2018 he showed some flashes.

Against Nichols State or something, Central Michigan and maybe the worst D1 school that year in Rutgers, he was averaging 33 yards passing and 15 yards rushing with a sub 3 yards per carry.

He also played less than half the snaps in those games. Peyton Bender was the starter.
