Their purchasing apartments as a business investment with the intent to rent them. They aren't buying up property, sitting with it empty, to drive up rental prices.

In fact, when one of them builds a new apartment complex, it should drive prices down, not up. You should be thankful for that.

It’s just a peculiar way to make a living. But the only way a landlord becomes a landlord is if they came into some money or real estate in the first place.

And there seems to be little pride in it. While most professionals want to be the best in their respective fields, landlords are often basically playing chicken with actually taking care of the properties that make them a living.

I've rented lots of places for many years of my life.

Renting an apartment was not "avoiding homelessness" in any of those cases. Not everyone who rents is in dire straits.

You seem to have a problem with the fact that there are people who can't afford rent more than you do with people renting apartments. But what you want is for landlords to solve this problem? As if that's even possible?

Landlords provide a thing that people want - the ability to have a home without needing to buy.

They own the place at a lower cost - they will not have PMI, they either won't have interest or it will likely be lower. They'll be more experienced with knowing how to get better rates on agents, loans, maintenance and insurance.

They have to compete with other lenders - I want to fix your sink because I don't want you renting somewhere else, forcing me to risk having no renter for a month or more, and needing to pay commission to the guy who showed you the place.

And there are tons of laws protecting tenants. It's damn near impossible to evict someone in Chicago.

And, the government does provide subsidized housing for people in poverty.
