meh

But also I’m weird about fishing now

The paradox of the conservationist: preserve this river! So we can beat the shit out of it in the name of recreation.

But that’s for another thread

Actually, I think it’s funny how the creepy “send nudes” type comments on influencer pages have been replaced with “start an only fans”

Cuz it’s not as creepy when it’s capitalism!

speaking of...Jim Jeffries does a great bit on just that sort of thing

prostitution is generally illegal in the US, unless your buddy Phil is in the corner filming it...then it’s capitalism

Yeah babe, I’m not some perverted looser who wants to see you naked, I’m just giving savvy business advice. A burgeoning market is a burgeoning market.

Also trying to come up with a joke about being groped by the invisible hand of the free market

But to say that with such resignation; such complacency - as if life will never be fair - let’s avoid that, and strive for better than that.

After all, that’s what separates us from the animals.
We don't all want to be completely equal.

We want equality of opportunity. And considering you're an educated white male, you're about the last person who should be whining about not having a fair shot and this game called life.

I don't want everyone to have equal everythings.

Do you know anyone not motivated by money?

Particularly in Merica
Me.

I am motivated by time with my wife/kids and time spent golfing. I found a job that allows the lifestyle that maximizes my happiness. But I will never be able to afford to live in Colorado and I will never live in a million dollar mansion. I will enjoy/appreciate my 3bed 3bath house in central IL and live my life accordingly within my means.

I’m interested in a career change. I wanna be a professional landlord!

In lieu of a School Of Landlording, I guess I’ll just have to seek investors.

Who wants to buy property and have me manage it for you??
I go away for an hour and when I come back your ass is all black and blue....damn, you take a beating like a man, or a masochist, or someone who doesn't know when to quit.

Before you find investors you have to find an opportunity and bring it to them. Investors have no limit to the number of people willing to work for them. They are looking for opportunities/ideas and if they can't find them themselves, they need and are willing to pay someone to bring one to them. It's really that simple.

You need to leave the places that are already "opportunitied out" and look for the next great place. The only opportunities left to develop in the Fraser valley are way out of the realm of your pocket book and no one who owns any of that land needs your help to do anything with it.

You need to find a place where you could buy 20 acres for $20K that has water and then you can do what you think you want to do. I know a town that owns 90 acres and they are looking for someone to develop low cost housing. We are building structures out of mud there and we buy lumber direct from a mill that sells it rough sawn, cut from beetle kill pine at a big discount. There are opportunities out there at a price point where you could get involved.

But.....

....you are going to have to get out of your comfort zone, you are gonna hafta put some sweat equity in, you may have to work harder than you have ever worked in your life. And before you live the good life you may have to do some subsistence living.

but.....

...I will also say it may not suck more than your life right now and when you are 10 years down the road you may look back and be pretty pleased with what you have accomplished and think it was all worth it. Get some skin in the game mister.

Seriously, what do you have to lose? A shitty job and a shit filled apartment?

You know where to find us. Overlander will be making manhattans out back and I will be bringing BBQ from KC for the feasts. Defix can explain which end of a hammer to hold and how to run the table saw without losing a finger. There will be weed and beer in the Spud Lounge at happy hour when we are all too tired to work any more.
That actually sounds pretty awesome

ousdahl wrote: Tue Aug 17, 2021 12:41 pm Much of it, here at least, is that there’s so much competition for housing.

Everyone knows it too.

Landlords know they can get away with slacking, since it’s so easy to find new renters. And renters know to put up with more than they should, since they’re otherwise facing literal homelessness.

Maybe that’s a point I wanted to make - I dunno if the threat of homelessness should be treated like just another market choice.
I you want to make a case against allowing people to go homeless, you need to start with the economics of it. What does it cost taxpayers and how can they get better results for less spending.

Next, what would be the cost of a better safety net?

Who's fighting? I thought you wanted to change things and fix shit? You can't fix shit unless you know what is broke and why.

Fair enough.

Yeah, I don’t wanna fight.

But if we can discuss in some constructive way, allsome.

I’ll admit I didn’t read the entire report, just glanced over the synopsis and cherry picked the rest for memes

and ho-lee-shit, metro denver spends almost half a billion dollars a year on homelessness?!

I’m looking for some info on what causes homelessness in there…they mention substance abuse and mental health. What else?

It also mentions a scarcity of affordable housing in the area. To what degree is that a factor?

Or what about better wages? It doesn’t seem to mention that, but a living wage might go a long way toward affording a place to live

Sure. So does choosing where you live. You can't live in one of the most expensive areas in the country and expect to get by if you don't have the money to do so. Low wage workers aren't going to be able to afford the same houses in the same areas as millionaires.

It isn't the governements job to provide beachfront property to everyone who wants it regardless of if they can actually afford it.

If you believe that, then the gummint has some beach front property in denver they’d like to sell you.

we’re not talking about millionaire homes here. We’re talking just not being homeless.

And even if we assume these low wage workers somehow also have the economic mobility to just up and move to some other market, then what? Who’s gonna serve lattes and wash dishes and clean the beach front homes for those millionaires, then?

Unfortunately none of us are entitled to a given area. Especially if we don't own land/property in that area.

Economic mobility is always an obstacle. But it is much easier to address on a personal basis than trying to live in an area that only millionaires can afford.

It sucks. You had a nice area that was a hidden gem for many years. But the secret is out. The rich people are going to buy up the properties because it's such a desirable area. That benefits the people who purchased property there decades ago. They get out (like plano or twocoach) with a profit. Unfortunately renters who have no skin in the game only get the downsides of the increased cost of living.

Eventually the rich people will pay a premium for the things you mention so wages will catch up or there won't be those amenities they desire. But it isn't instantaneous. And it isn't something anyone is entitled to.

You're not entitled to your area any more than the rich people. Unfortunately you will probably have to find a more affordable place to live/work.

We all experience those things on different levels. Nicer things cost more.

I mean, once again, somebody else is making the topic about me.

I thought we were talking about denver, one of the largest major cities and metros in Merica. It’s hardly just a resort town for millionaires.

But if you really wanna stick to ski towns, I dunno how I feel about you saying “renters have no skin in the game.” There’s a local working class, many of whom who have lived here for years or even grew up here, who are established in the community, and critical to the local economy and infrastructure. Let’s not marginalize them, please. In many ways, they have even more skin in the game than yall!

It sucks that apparently no one cares about them as that is, until affected personally by having longer wait times for yall’s cheeseburgers.

But hey, I like your optimism that eventually “the rich people will pay a premium for the things you mention so wages will catch up.” So let’s just cross our fingers and hope that wealth really does start to trickle down.

That's not trickle down. That's supply and demand.

working class people often have to commute distances to where they work because cost of living is too high in a given market.

That is not something that needs "fixed". It's just reality.

And if you rent, you by definition have no skin in the game when it comes to property values in a given area.
