They have no clue do they?
they just don’t know. They are making it up as they go.

I just watched 3 experts on cnn say we the people should get the booster. When asked why “we the people should get the booster” the answer was “we are not sure. You probably should get it. you will probably be fine if you don’t.”

They just don’t know. They are making it up as they go.
what experts?

got a link? otherwise i’m calling bs

the reason to get boosters is, and as always been the same: antibody protection is waning

both Fauci and Wolensky said nearly the exact same thing this morning. the last week’s worth of data in particular is indicating that protection against infection is dropping among those that were vaccinated earliest

But is every 8 months normal? Seems like an incredibly short time frame of protection. I guess flu shots are every 12 months, but are those considered boosters? Or just completely different vaccines?

what’s the difference?

the boosters, unless i’m mistaken, are different from the originals...they’ve been tweaked (just like flu shots) to better prepare the body for delta

google is your friend...do some research.

as someone said on the last page, boosters are quite common for a number of vaccines, and the time frame of protection varies quite a bit. i had to get boosters every year when i was doing field work in grad school and traveling internationally...rabies, yellow fever, japanese encephalitis, etc. etc. (i didn’t get boosters for each every year, but was always due for something)

BasketballJayhawk wrote: Thu Aug 19, 2021 9:19 am Ok. So lets say we can have a national database of vaccination status. It runs perfectly. No issues.

Still.... something like 35% of the black population is vaccinated. The most recent data I see says approximately 10% of the 72% of our population that has received 1 dose are black people.

We are okay with the unintended consequences that will go with the move to limit their access to doctors offices? Schools? Grocery stores? Work?

Do the downsides outweigh the upsides?

Just an interesting thing to think about. A lot of these policies only get looked at through the lense of white people. And saw some discussion of this starting to pop up in those communities as we start getting closer to vaccine passports (or whatever we decide to call them).

My only real point is we need to be careful how we implement something like this. There will be numerous obstacles.

Not sure if i am for or against passports and mandates yet.
I think these are largely separate issues.

But, i think that’s why the starting point is leisure privileges. Concerts, travel, sports, etc. From there, large office buildings for employees. I agree the problem that necessities presents, particularly those who can’t get vaxxed for legit medical reasons.

it's not that hard. we are issued a vax card at the point of vax. stamped and dated.

every person in America has a smart phone. take a picture of your vax card. store it in a safe place.

Of course “they are making it up as we go along” but not in the way you think. The knowledge base is relatively short lived and we are finding new stuff almost on a daily/weekly basis. Medical Science is reactionary in this respect. We alter our thinking based on our most recent observations. That’s not a bug; it’s a feature. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

Sure. If you have a primary care physician. Less than 65% of americans in their 30s have primary care physicians.

I imagine that number is even lower in poorer communities with less access to healthcare?
So you are whining that people who dont have a primary physician also dont have a reliable means of storing their vaccination documentation? At what point are people just expected to act like freaking adults and securely store important documents? Good grief.
I have securely stored my documents of vaccination. I am more organized than many. And I have easily available access to healthcare. Many don't.

At what point will you realize not everyone is as smart or lucky or well off as you? Good grief. Fuck the disadvantaged or most vulnerable? That's who we are trying to protect most.

35% of the black population is fully vaccinated. We want to limit services to them even more? There are unintended consequences to this stuff.

We need(ed) to think this through, otherwise it won't work....and a huge problem is that we didn't think this through at the beginning of vaccines being administered and now some people have crappy records and others have no records of their vaccination status...and we need to update the entire list continously because we need boosters every 8 months....that is no small task. It's a huge database of info that will be needed.
You have to be well off to put a piece of paper in a place where you will remember where it is and not lose it? WTF?

Waiting for Illy to take up the "but what about poor people that don't have cell phones? How dare you be so uppity to assume that everyone has one" rant but he seems to only roll those out for certain people...

Do you seriously not know how the annual flu vaccines work?

Aren’t annual flu vaccines tweaked every season too?

Will that be the same for covid vaccines?

A grossly simplified explanation is that there are more than 100 different strains of the flu virus that people can catch and every season's flu is basically some mashed up variant of those so they take a "best guess" at what that year's flu is going to be and produce a vaccine that reduces your likelihood of getting the flu by 40-60% or so.

Right now, there aren't 100+ variants of COVID but with the way our ignorant country is progressing, there will be eventually.

I was also waiting for it.

I googled because I knew it was high: at last count, cell phone ownership was at 97%, and 85% of those were smartphones.

I will jump to my own conclusion here and say that it seems like more of those people not having a smartphone is more preference rather than not being able to afford it.
