I enjoy hunting and lots of other outdoorsy things. I have never found the appeal in fishing.

Would it help to rephrase “fishing” to something more along the lines of “drinking about 15 beers?”

I should have noted - I do very much like ice fishing. In which there is no fishing, and all beer-drinking. 15 by lunch.

I’ve hooked more than a few turtles while fishing. Bullfrogs and snakes too.

I’ll unhook and release, just like any other creature. Except for snapping turtles. Don’t wanna loose a finger, I’m just cutting the line for them

not that contrarians care, but responsible anglers do things like limit excess time the animal is out of the water (or even struggling in the water), use barb-less hooks, etc.

also, HUGE differences in the anatomy (and related pain receptors) of a fish mouth versus any of those higher vertebrates that Ousie referenced

When I was guiding, if a client wanted to photo for the gram, I would tell them as soon as you lift the fish outta the net, take a deep breath and hold it. If you need to catch your breath, it’s time to put the fish back, cuz they need oxygen too

kids in particular loved it. I have a pic somewhere of one little guy holding a nice trout with his cheeks all puffed up

What is the difference? Unless you're eating the catch/kill then it's purely for sport.
