Should take this with a grain of salt b/c 1. I am as hooked on the NFL right now as anyone, and 2. the new NFL TV deal is absolutely massive and we aren't far off from some players making $50m a year, but I wonder if the NFL down the road is not doing itself any favors by adding an extra game, and eventually another one.
At least from the fan enjoyment perspective, because it sure seems even more silly this year to overreact to games played in September or even October.
I was thinking about this, making a required week (or two when we go to 18 in a couple of years) mandatory week off, and two bye weeks. (with this drop to 1 maybe 2 preseason games). So Patrick can only play 16 out of the 18 games. Can correspond with injuries as well. Would add so much more strategy to the game. Wouldn't really affect too much because everyone would rest their best players for like Detroit/Jets/Jayhawks. Maintains the 16 game records and stretches out the season so the NFL makes even more money.
But since that would never happen, I don't think it really affects anything. Preseason (IMO) will likely drop down to two games, regular season will get to 18, and I think that second bye week will get added. I *think* the game is getting safer with the harsher penalties for roughing already, and the NFL should continue down that road. I think they should extrapolate it out so a player who gets ejected gets ejected for the next game to, and forfeits their paycheck. In Soccer a red card DQs you for the next game, and the college game is doing something similar now. You mess with a player's check, they will start to pull up and take less cheap shots.
