I was significantly more conservative when I was younger. Having kids has made me realize how goddamned hard things would be without money, and so I'm much more in favor of a strong social safety net than I was when I was younger.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 2:16 pmyou must’ve missed the part about growing up and being an adult where you stop being a selfish idiot

why is your decision to rail against vaccines and the severity ok, but mine to not give patronage to a business i don’t like problematic?
and again, why won’t you tell us where you get your information? what are hiding, or ashamed of?
I don't rail against vaccines. I think they are helpful in general. necessary for some. but for the most part not necessary for most. some people are going to die from covid, I have a more realistic and less sensitive approach. what information do you need sources for what are you referring to? I don't get information from one particular source that funnels opinions into my mind. I'm pretty open to hearing all sides and perspectives of the argument. I like to look at studies done outside of the US, where there isnt a raging culture war. but most studies I like to see where the funding for it came and who was involved, what their goal was what they were trying to prove, or if it was purely scientific

you took the opposite path most people do. strong safety nets sound good in theory but society has too many lazy leeches that want a hand out instead of putting in the effort to provide for themselvesjfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 3:47 pmI was significantly more conservative when I was younger. I mean, not that I too was a conservative youth who as an adult just keeps ending up further and further left…

It's ridiculous and undermines a legitimate religious exemption.
wut?
If a religion doesn't allow for vaccines is that any different than Muslims not eating pork/requesting halal food?
Ok.
Yea, I dont know what religion Wiggins practices.

I suppose if the Flying Spaghetti Monster told me I shouldn’t pay taxes then am I exempt from paying taxes? Before you laugh, just remember that Pastafarians’ headgear of a colander has been permitted/recognized in various States as religious accoutrements!!

Masks are far from perfect. Its a known fact that they don't completely stop the spread of covid. you can easily find that information anywhereTraditionKU wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 4:12 pmlet’s start with your claims about mask ineffectiveness and go from thererandylahey wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 3:52 pmnot supporting a business for (insert random political reason) is cancel cultureTraditionKU wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 1:42 pm

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
Ahh. I love this new argument that seems to only apply to covid.
It's not perfect therefore it doesn't work.
We don't hold ANYTHING else to that standard.
"Vaccine reduces your chances of getting the virus, reduces your chances of getting severely sick, and reduces your chances of dying". BUT there are breakthrough cases so it doesn't work
"Masks reduce your chance of getting covid and reduce your chances of spreading it if you have it unknowingly" BUT it's not perfect so why bother.
It's the dumbest shit I ever heard of.
I lock my doors when I'm gone to prevent people from entering my home or taking my possessions, it isn't perfect, but fairly effective. I drive with headlights on at night, I can't see as much as I can during the day, that doesn't mean they don't work, I can see a lot more with them on than I can with them off. I wash my hands after I shit and also before I eat, it helps prevent the spread of illness, it doesn't eliminate all intestinal pathogens, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. I clean my house in part to prevent insects from coming inside, I occasionally see an insect inside, it doesn't mean that I should let food rot on my counter.

Closest known relatives of virus behind COVID-19 found in Laos

“When SARS-CoV-2 was first sequenced, the receptor binding domain didn’t really look like anything we’d seen before,” says Edward Holmes, a virologist at the University of Sydney in Australia. This caused some people to speculate that the virus had been created in a laboratory. But the Laos coronaviruses confirm these parts of SARS-CoV-2 exist in nature, he says.
“I am more convinced than ever that SARS-CoV-2 has a natural origin,” agrees Linfa Wang, a virologist at Duke–NUS Medical School in Singapore.
Together with relatives of SARS-CoV-2 discovered in Thailand2, Cambodia3 and Yunnan in southern China4, the study demonstrates that southeast Asia is a “hotspot of diversity for SARS-CoV-2 related viruses”, says Alice Latinne, an evolutionary biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society Vietnam in Hanoi.
In an extra step in their study, Eloit and his team showed in the laboratory that the receptor binding domains of these viruses could attach to the ACE2 receptor on human cells as efficiently as some early variants of SARS-CoV-2. The researchers also cultured BANAL-236 in cells, which Eloit says they will now use to study how pathogenic the virus is in animal models.
Last year, researchers described another close relative of SARS-CoV-2, called RaTG13, which was found in bats in Yunnan5. It is 96.1% identical to SARS-CoV-2 overall and the two viruses probably shared a common ancestor 40–70 years ago6. BANAL-52 is 96.8% identical to SARS-CoV-2, says Eloit — and all three newly discovered viruses have individual sections that are more similar to sections of SARS CoV-2 than seen in any other viruses.
Viruses swap chunks of RNA with one another through a process called recombination, and one section in BANAL-103 and BANAL-52 could have shared an ancestor with sections of SARS-CoV-2 less than a decade ago, says Spyros Lytras, an evolutionary virologist at the University of Glasgow. “These viruses recombine so much that different bits of the genome have different evolutionary histories,” he says.

Masks are far from perfect. If any of you ever do anything in the real world you'll notice most people don't see any reason to wear them. The politicians that make the mandates don't even wear them
And they take away human normalcy. People need to be able to see eachothers faces to speak and interact. Its how children learn language how to function how to communicate. They aren't that effective and that necessary. If people want to wear one that fine. Same if people don't. Not necessary

And as an aside, how'd you like to be the scientist crawling around in caves in Laos sampling bats shit, piss and spit? Woof. I don't think people have enough awareness and respect for the type of work people do to study things such as this. We picture them as nerds in lab coats in a sterile lab but holy crap. Knowing you are surrounded by a volume of insane viruses and pathogens like that would be scary. Truly dedicated professionals.
