In that first tournament game Mitch started last year, the other team’s big was backing him down and scoring at will. Like every possession.

I know that guy was maybe better than your average college 5, but I just don’t like the idea of our backup big only being playable if the other team just isn’t that good.

Mitch gets blocks and charges, but he doesn't rebound well on that end and makes a lot of mistakes (resulting in the ass-chewings hasbeen referred to). Doesn't seem like that high a bar.
Agree with this, and maybe I haven't been specific enough, but I think the defensive end is such a high learning curve for any 1 year player, but especially one that hasn't played anything close to this level. And, we have national title aspirations.

Even if Cam isn’t up to speed til March, he could still be the player we need

I just need to be honest about how much I hate watching Mitch play basketball. I don't think there's another player in the last 10 years who comes close for me. I wasn't a fan of Jamari or Lucas either, but I'd take either one over 29 year old Mitch Lightfoot.

(And it still blows my mind that Silvio came in as a half semester freshman and was still a effective enough to start overtime in the elite 8)

This is a little bit like arguing over Mahomes's backup.

Silvio was a godsend, but a big part of the reason for that is because of how much different of a player he was than Mitch Lightfoot.

Not really. Dave only played 23min per game last year. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he can stay on the court for 32+ this year.

Just saying, as fans, you know you're a bunch of nerds when you're arguing over the very last part of the rotation and choosing between two players that are built for the D-II level.

2018 Silvio was one of the best rebounders we've had under Self.

I think that's what we need out of the position in 2022, but we have what we have.

A senior Landen Lucas would be an elite backup.
Would absolutely take him.

What other big transfers could have been available?

We signed Cam fairly early in the transfer portal, so all D2 aside, maybe Self and Boschee know something we don’t.

Landen did a lot well, but the lack of dunking/missing layups honestly seemed like a bit at a certain point.

This. Neither of those two guys is going to average more than a handful of minutes a game. I suspect that when McCormack isn't playing, we'll spend more time with Jalen Wilson as our biggest guy on the floor than with either Martin or Lightfoot. Clemence will get a few minutes here and there as well.

On one hand yea it’s the last part of the rotation

But on the other, backup big might be the most important reserve there is

Jalen is not big/strong enough to be a 5 imo...that's a losing strategy for us. Especially defensively. It's also not the position he wants to play and if he has any pro aspirations i am guessing he'd like to get a chance to play a more natural position as a wing/stretch 4.

But that’s the thing!

Mitch isn’t big or strong enough to play the 5 either.

And Cam is TBD.

With Jalen at the 5, there’s at least the potential to exploit a mismatch

They're both significantly bigger and stronger than Jalen.
