Dotson will always be in the category of doing everything he could in college, individually, and coming back wasn't going to be more beneficial than going pro. Dedric Lawson, Malik Newman to name a few others. Very good to great college players, but coming back wouldn't have helped them get any higher on draft boards. Careers for professional sports have such a short shelf life that I will never fault a player for maximizing their earning potential.

NIL deals absolutely change that. I don't think it's crazy to think a returning second team All-American would get more in endorsements than a two-way or a G-League contract would pay. Makes the decisions for fridge prospects a little more difficult, but it's hard to say Dotson made the wrong decision given the rules at the time he made it.

They have a tendency to get cold from time to time. Probably the main thing that separates them from the guaranteed picks.
