more evidence that humans tend to suck

the species is one of the most endangered in the world because of humans, and now dies of covid because of humans, in a zoo because of humans

I’m sure we’ve discussed before, but are zoos really that inhumane?

Animals want food, water, and shelter. They get all consistently at a zoo. And get veterinary care. In some ways, the quality of life may be better than in the wild.

Of course it depends on each zoo and each species and stuff

And not that I’m pro-zoo or anything

it’s tough

i’m generally an advocate because there is undoubtedly an educational/conservation benefit indirectly. there are also a number of zoos that contribute directly to conservation initiatives

however, i struggle with justifying keeping some animals in even the best zoos…namely those that migrate or would otherwise occupy massive ranges in the wild

most large cats, elephants, polar bears, etc., have no place being in a zoo in my opinion unless they’ve been injured and would otherwise die in the wild (much like most, if not all captive bald eagles in the US)

i also question the validity and investment in captive breeding programs and assurance colonies for species that are unlikely to be reintruduced due to habitat loss and continued poaching pressures

edit: there’s also the issue of all zoos not being equal, obviously. there was a time when the Topeka Zoo was world famous…not so much anymore because the “animals in cages” scenario is 1) no longer an acceptable aesthetic, and 2) such enclosures are inhumane by most animal welfare standards today

from WashPo:

… Worobey has been open to the theory of a lab leak. He was one of the 18 scientists who wrote a much-publicized letter to Science in May calling for an investigation of all possible sources of the virus, including a laboratory accident. But he now contends that the geographic pattern of early cases strongly supports the hypothesis that the virus came from an infected animal at the Huanan Seafood Market — an argument that will probably revive the broader debate about the virus’s origins.

Worobey notes that more than half of the earliest documented illnesses from the virus were among people with a direct connection to the market, and he argues this was not merely the result of the early focus on the market as a potential source of the outbreak. He concludes that the first patient known to fall ill with the virus was a female seafood vendor at the market who became symptomatic on Dec. 11, 2019.

That contradicts a report earlier this year from investigators for the World Health Organization and China, who concluded that the first patient was a 41-year-old accountant with no connection to the market who became sick on Dec. 8. But Worobey said the accountant’s medical records reveal he visited the dentist that day to deal with retained baby teeth that needed to be pulled, but did not show symptoms from the coronavirus until Dec. 16, and was hospitalized six days after that...

Maybe other people in your life think you’re worth jumping for when you bark, but I’m not one of them. Simple words like “please” and “would you mind” go a long way when dealing with your peers rather than your underlings.

Maybe where you come from acting like a horse's ass has no consequences and no one responds to you. Following the rules and not being a giant prick go a lot further than being a petulant child who cries like a bitch when he gets confronted.
