They all came in tight and backed down when it mattered most. I think Roy was too nice to compete with UNC for the best keeds. He conceded them to Dean Smith out of weakness and loyalty. Once he got to Chapel Hill, he wasn't encumbered by that anymore. I think he also figured out that he needed some mean kids in the mix by that time.

Most of Roy's teams were definitely soft but that doesn't mean all the players he coached were soft.
That said, there seems to be a lot of people who don't understand what being soft really means. Some of the softest players of the Self era are the Twins and Sherron.
Mean mugging, fighting and trash talking are often (but not always) signs of mental weakness. Jordan and Bird would be obvious exceptions.

So dumb.
Sherron may have been slightly soft from eating a bit too much but he was nowhere near the soft you are describing.
He won us a title and played more minutes in the 2008 tournament run then your "unsoft" boi RussRob. He also averaged 26 points a game in the 2009 NCAA tournament.
He had a piss poor game v UNI and we got upset. That's all you have to hang your hat on.
