Meh.
I'd argue it's tougher to have a higher FG% today than when Bird played because of generally better players, coaching, competition and the 3 point line is further back.

For a different type of scorer, ( i.e. a post player or a slasher who mostly drives to the basket ) i'd say it would be around equal, because while the competition was a good deal worse, defense was rougher, and you'd probably miss shots that wouldn't be counted as misses today bc you'd be fouled.

But Bird was so skilled.

Bird had same 3 point line distance as today. It was brand new, so attempts per team were around 5 per game. Different game.

Isaiah Thomas once said something to the effect that, if you put him, Jordan, Bird, and Magic in a room together and only one person could leave alive, it would be Bird. He was a bad man with superior skills. Not a flopping, whining sissy boy like KD or Curry.

We aren't playing death match, we're playing basketball.
Put Jordan, Bird, Magic and Brock Lesnar in a room.
Jordan, Bird and Magic are still better basketball players.

And this sissy boy thing wreaks of someone who hasn't watched Durant in the NBA playoffs.

Depends on whether you’re shooting around or playing an actual game. Bird would win because he was relentless, smart, and ruthless. Players today are soft. They get their feelings hurt and use crying to the refs as a strategy. If you did that back in the 80’s, you’d be collecting your teeth off of the floor by the end of the game.

"Players today are soft."

There is some truth to this, in terms of 'toughness'.
But players today are also better at basketball.

Durant has been cold blooded for long stretches before.

I actually think that both Bird and Durant are 2 of the most underrated players in NBA history. Probably a lot because one played against Magic and the other LeBron. But, I'd have them the 2nd and 3rd best SF of all time behind LeBron by a good margin over the rest of the field.

There is a type of person that uses terms like sissies/snowflakes as very broad generalizations.
I've found that type of person often times doesn't have enough information on the other side of the argument to make a good decision.
While I josh around with Illy about the amount of the NBA he watches, I know he probably tunes in a decent amount. I'm pretty confident JK can count the number of full Durant games he's watched on one hand.

( and yes, i've watched more Bird games than five -- ESPN Classic in college baby! RIP to that channel btw )

Flopper. End of story. Not as egregious as Lebron, but a close second.

Speaking of Curry in the goat thread, guess who broke the all time 3 pointer record just last night!

Goat curry is really good. An all time favorite dish.

Only time those two words should be used together.

If we're playing with todays rules, and want a peak player for a season, I would consider breaking basketball Curry ( 15-16? ).

Yum!

In the context of goat shooters specifically though, the dood did just best Ray Allen and Reggie Miller…

Tough to argue against GOAT shooter. Bird would be the only fun argument b/c he was so absurd. Bo Jackson-like stories. I'm sure Curry has/will have the same, though.

Yeah, what peak Steph was/is able to do is awesome. One of the transcendent players in that he changed the game, for better or worse.

He did it as a little runt guard guard too, not even an elite athlete or freak size or anything like most other transcendent guys.

Dude came in an all-time shooter, and also developed an elite pg game too, and has amassed quite the hardware to go with.

The thing about Curry is that the whole 'FLOP SISSY' dull mouth breather argument doesn't work as well -- Curry jacks up shots fastasfuckboi from any distance on the court -- so he doesn't need to flop.
