leave that out and just say that Amazon shouldve heeded warnings and sent the workers home and it becomes more powerful and way less qspiracy laden
Just Ledoux it
Re: Evil Rich People
Pretty tough to lay it on climate change but we haven't ever seen a tornado track 250 miles in December

Re: Evil Rich People
at what point is it be appropriate to “blame” climate change?
Re: Evil Rich People
Significant tornado events outside typical tornado season raise the question of whether climate change may have played a role. Event-based attribution for climate change is still in development, particularly for tornadoes that need fine scales to model. Given the historical precedent, it would be misleading to definitively state a relationship to climate change without further assessment.
Even so, there are potential signs. Observations suggest an eastward shift in tornado frequency in recent decades and increasing frequency of tornadoes in outbreaks, though the ties to climate change are as yet uncertain. Climate projections for the late 21st century have suggested that the conditions favorable to the development of the severe storms that produce tornadoes will increase over North America, and the impact could be greatest in the winter and fall.
New research has also identified that these changes might be more rapid than we thought. Projections suggest increases in severe storm environments in fall and winter of 16% to 25% relative to now, per degrees Celsius of warming.
How this will impact tornado frequency or intensity remains uncertain, but even with frequency remaining static, the expansion of built-up areas in the frequently impacted southeastern USA is seeing increasing tornado vulnerability.

Re: Evil Rich People
but I dunno if we can really overestimate the amount of rich people evil on display this weekend.
think about your average business owner. The kinda guy who's well-off enough but probably not spending his discretionary income on space tourism either. The kinda guy who's likely to have actually physically been to the location of the business at some point.
If a natural disaster ripped through your business, killing 6 employees and destroying your property, it would be a career- and life-altering moment. You would prob be consumed by it, not able to focus on anything but, especially if you were actually there when it happened, which would be likely with most average bidness owners. You and your business would likely never be the same.
but what do evil rich people do about it?
Go about their lifestyle of vanity and excess like you didn't even notice, and once your PR firm finally gets around to penning it for you, eventually offer a nice tweet.
Thoughts and prayers!

At 8:59 p.m. ET on Saturday, after a full day's worth of activities that included the landing of Blue Origin, the Army-Navy game, the Heisman Trophy presentation and rising body count from the deadly storm, Bezos sent a tweet that stated he was heartbroken about his employees dying in the storm.

Re: Evil Rich People
It’s definitely satire, but I’m not sure the bigger point to take away from that headline is just trying to be funny.
Re: Evil Rich People
This story isn’t getting enough scrutiny.
Or rather, corporations aren’t subject to enough accountability.
Where’s the pro-life crowd?

Candle factory is denying they said that and that the workers "were free to leave at anytime".
I'm having a hard time believing that one.

Me too.
The factory apparently has a history of sketchy labor policies, and been fined for osha violations and stuff before

Re: Evil Rich People
Of course the Libertarians and wannabe Libertarians (ie modern Republicans) don’t care. If you want good working conditions start by hiring fetuses. Then they’ll pretend to care. These are just sacrifices at the altar of deregulation
Re: Evil Rich People
Yea.
You’d think more Mericans wouldn’t be so willing to go die for $8 bucks an hour.
And not to change the subject, but gonna leave this one here too.

Since we don’t have a “we lost the battle for the dem party’s soul too” thread.
“Pelosi rejects stock trading ban for members of Congress”
Free market my ass.

Re: Evil Rich People
Serious question. Why do you or anyone else reading this feel members of congress shouldn't own/sell stocks - if they aren't breaking any laws/rules?

He doesn't know. But it sounded edgy on the meme he saw.
They should be able to own stocks.
The should be monitored closely due to the nature of their positions which could lead to potential conflicts of interest with information not available to the public that could be considered insider trading.

Re: Evil Rich People
I think it’s a conflict of interest. We shouldn’t have to ask ourselves whether the ones making the rules are also breaking the rules.
Despite illy’s attempts to zing me, I think he actually did a good job of making my point for me.
Lawmakers are privy to all sorts of confidential information, and they shouldn’t be able to leverage that for their own personal gain. How is that a free market?
Pelosi’s been a congresswoman for years, always earning under $200k in salary, yet somehow she’s worth almost
$200 mil.
This isn’t the best analogy, but - would you be cool playing basketball if one of the players on the opposing team was also a ref?

Re: Evil Rich People
Then create some good old American jobs and hire a group of people to set up better rules surrounding stock trades by members of Congress and to monitor that those rules aren't broken. It's absurd to not allow them to invest their money in stocks.ousdahl wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 8:25 am I think it’s a conflict of interest. Re: Evil Rich People
that may be true but they are likely leaving out the back half of the statement of "...but if they chose to leave they understood that they would be fired."
