He had a knife. If a cop can't disarm a man in a wheelchair with a small knife, he shouldn't be a cop. No need to shoot him 9 freaking times. The man obviously had mental issues. Stun gun perhaps, but unloading your clip into him, not ok.

I agree with you 100% but saying he was shot for shoplifting is kind of like saying the people Rittenhouse shot were shot because they were Brewers fans.

It sounds like suicide by cop, combined with another Dirty Harry police mentality.

I know he allegedly shoplifted and allegedly had a knife and allegedly threatened loss prevention and allegedly said the only way the cop would get the knife out of his hand is if he shoots.

But the key word there is allegedly.

And I think the burden should be on the cop to demonstrate why a guy rolling the other direction in a wheelchair caused him to “fear for his life.”

Well, the allegation that he said the only he’d put down his knife is if the cop shoots.

That ideally should prompt some training protocol along the lines of, ok this is a mental health crisis as much as anything. But instead, it once again prompted that “make my day” reaction.

And yea not every case is the same, and sometimes lethal force may be necessary for the sake of the cop’s own life even if it is a mental health crisis.

But then you realize, this was a dude in a wheelchair, and got shot in the back.

I'm hoping for a lighter sentence for her. It's not like she kneeled on this guys neck for 15 minutes until he was dead. She may have honestly thought she had her taser.

Yea. It’s not as cold blooded as Chauvin, for sure.

And I said surprising, considering the leniency cops tend to get, and cuz she seemed genuinely surprised she fired her gun instead of her taser.

But apparently at issue was not whether she intended a taser versus a gun, but whether she should have recognized she was holding the gun, or whether she should have drawn any weapon at all.

Prosecutors argued she should have known the difference between a taser and a gun. Apparently, jurors agreed. She’s a 26 year veteran with extensive training with both firearms and tasers, and prosecutors said all that training was meant to prevent just this sort of thing.

According to the testimony of use-of-force experts, as well as the police department’s own policies, use of force was not appropriate in the situation either way.

Defense lawyers basically argued it was a mistake. And I know cops are held to a different standard, but name one other situation in which you could grab a gun and shoot someone and get away with it by simply saying, oops. Yeah, I know cops have gotten away with much less, but apparently it wasn’t a good enough argument to claim it was just a mistake.

The other defense argument was that if Wright had been allowed to drive away, he could have put officers in jeopardy. That seems pretty presumptive.
