People to carry his water, mostly, and boy did he get that in spades.

Philip Klein, a conservative critic of Trump's, nevertheless put it well:

Mitt Romney has spent the past 25 years repositioning himself politically, so it was no surprise that he took to the Washington Post ahead of his swearing in as Utah senator to signal that, at least for now, he wants to be known as an independent-minded Republican critic of President Trump.

As somebody with no ideological core, dating back to his 1994 Senate race in Massachusetts, Romney has described himself as everything from an "independent during Reagan-Bush" to "severely conservative." He went from welcoming Trump's endorsement during his 2012 presidential race, to calling Trump a "phony" in 2016, only to go on to cozy up to him in pursuit of the secretary of state job later that year, and eventually to once again welcome Trump's endorsement in his Senate race. And now, he wants to be known again as a blistering critic.

There's a Flakian, "deeply concerned" void to fill.

"no idealogical core" ---- doesn't seem like a valid argument with the current leader of the Republicans being Trump.

It wasn't meant as a comparison, merely a critique of Romney's attempt to position himself as the defender of "real" conservatism.

Maybe "no consistent ideology" would be more accurate. Romney has played many roles in his pursuit of public office but that doesn't nullify him calling out Trump for having no morals at all. He's not wrong.

Good lord.

Whether or not his message is wrong, he's the wrong messenger.

Moreover, his message is one that's pretty well worn by now.

Of course he's not wrong...but he's also not to be taken seriously as someone who might just have the backbone to do something about Trump. In other words - unless and until proven otherwise, stunts like this should not be perceived as anything more than harvesting attention.

Eventually, of course, the gluttony that elected conservatives are demonstrating (by accepting every last bit of Trump's bullshit in exchange for short-term policy and fundraising gains) will come back to bite the right directly in the ass. A severe overcorrection to the left is coming, and it is being brought on by conservatives not content to stop at getting fat.

Trump and Mittens should have a contest to see who’s got more money tied up overseas.

Not that they’d ever tell any American voters about it, o’course.

I agree that the message is worn out. But what do you do, just sit quietly and say nothing? This is the problem in today's media and today's society. Trump has figured out that if you simply do and say 5,000 repulsive things that people simply get numb to them and turn their frustration on the messenger to tell them to shut up, they've heard enough.

Then Trump is free to do whatever he wants. We still have 2 years of this scumbag to go and if we stop holding his feet to the fire then we will have 6 years left.

Didnt Mitt get the memo the first time around?

Voters were so underwhelmed by him in 2012 that they still preferred to just stick with the Kenyan Mooslim instead!

You can do whatever you see fit. Mittens, by contrast, should have the decency and sense not to make a ridiculous production of himself by patently "posturing" to be the savior of the party.

He's a good man, presumably, but is an ideologically and temperamentally opportunist politician.

Not likely.

Utah is not exactly "Trump country."
