Didn't know what thread to post this on but am throwing it on here.

Dumb question time.
Yesterday there was the hostage situation in the synagogue near Dallas.
I learned of it through Twitter and then turned on CNN (because the tweet had CNN as it's source).
CNN ran and stayed with the story for a long period of time. Of course there was speculation, and there were some things I felt should be discussed - that were not.
Anyways, there were 4 hostages and 1 "suspect". My insensitive thought was if the "authorities" ignored the "suspect" - at worst 5 people die. While of course that would have been tragic and newsworthy, I assume not a single person on here gives much thought to there probably being at least one city in this country in which 5 people were shot AND DIED in a single day. For example, maybe yesterday there were 6 in Chicago, two days ago maybe 5 in New York, the day before that maybe 7 in Atlanta.
Now for my dumb question.
Why are 4 people in a synagogue in Texas any more important (maybe I should say "newsworthy") than let's say 4 Black people in a "poor" neighborhood in Miami?
To me, they are not but I have many thoughts why others feel/felt they are - and not a single one of those thoughts is a good one.

Part of it is because it was happening in real time, and not being reported after the fact.

It gets more news because more people can relate to it. Especially white people. You go to your place of worship, regardless of religion, and you expect to be safe. You go to, say, south/west side of Chicago, you expect not to be safe.

It seemed like too much time on Djokovic and not enough time on the synagogue incident in my opinion.

I think at the beginning, when few details were known, CNN (like some around here) was salivating for this to be a texas Trumper with an assault rifle....and when it turned out that it wasn't, it just seemed like it wasn't quite as important to them anymore. Like immediately.

My observation/opinion.....

"At the beginning", like I said, CNN stuck with the story and was "reporting" on nothing else.
They stuck with the story for literally hours.
"At the beginning", anyone watching knew that the hostage taker was NOT a "Texas Trumper with an assault weapon". CNN reported that the hostage taker mentioned Aafia Siddiqui (and her release) and that the hostage taker spoke in both English and a foreign language (that wasn't Hebrew). They played the "live stream" from the Temple's website in which you could clearly hear the hostage taker speaking a foreign language at times. They still stuck with the story.
Yes, at one point they cut away BRIEFLY to say/show that Djokovic was ousted from Australia and then they went back to the hostage story for more than an hour.

Here is my harsh assessment. Right or wrong, I give credit to CNN because I believe less people in this country care about if 4 Jews (they never met nor even knew existed) are killed in a synagogue than if the number one tennis player in the world doesn't play in the Australian open because he is not vaccinated (Covid is affecting billions of people on this planet) - and yet CNN chose to prioritize the 4 Jews in the synagogue.
