I think they would have tried the FG regardless. He also said they were aiming to win the whole time so I think he was just post game yammering. Go for it and miss? In the playoffs. Make it? In the playoffs.
They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. They moved up two seeds with a win vs. a tie and avoided opening in Arrowhead vs. the Chiefs.

NFL really needs to go a modified Decision Day structure, where all games of one conference are in the Sunday 1pm ET window, and all games of the other conference are in the 425pm ET window.
I understand you'd need to move some TV rights around, but you can't have a situation like last night.
The Raiders just wanted in last night. The extra seven yards made the kick much less risky. No reason to try a long FG and maybe lose. The Raiders were taking their time on third down to kneel. Also: who calls a timeout and not stuff the run there?

But yeah. Why the NFL hurts teams with a Sunday night late decision is all money related.
I told my wife that the likelihood of a tie was enhanced geometrically since it was win-win. Only the Chargers lose that game outright. They gifted the Raiders points on their own 20 yard line earlier too.

Why can't "you" have a situation like last night?

It's really not good for the competitive integrity of the game for there to be a game where both teams' interests would be served by not competing. Sort of tanking, squared.

Ok, I don't disagree but if we are discussing "competitive integrity" then how far do we take it?
ALL teams have to play ALL "healthy" first stringers/starters all 4 quarters in week 18?
Also, I happen to feel the Chargers and Raiders earned that right to end their game in a tie if they so choose to do as such. Do people not realize the team (Steelers) that would have gotten fucked if the game ended in a tie - had a regular season tie of their own - that ended up being a huge reason why they made the playoffs?

Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. Having all conference games kick at the same time would pretty much resolve the particular issue at hand (and also the rest issue; with seven-team playoffs, it will be relatively rare for seedings/the bye to be set by Week 18).

Why not?!? I was riveted to a game I really didn't give a shit about at all.

Nothing in the play of the game led me to believe that either team was interested in not competing. It was one of the most competitive games I have watched in some time. The "neither team will compete" was just non-competitive fan blathering. Both teams clearly really wanted to win that game.
There were 38 seconds left and they were on the 39 yard line. Even if Jacobs got stopped for no gain on that 3rd down run, that's only a 56 yard FG and they had a timeout. Yes, they obviously discussed it as a possibility but in the "we have to discuss all options" mentality, not as a realistic option. Their kicker, Daniel Carlson is 6-7 from 50+ this season. They absolutely would have gone for the win with a FG attempt.

Flores fired? Brutal league. And why?
So weird. They should fire their QB and GM, not their HC. He seems like an excellent coach who is overperforming based on the roster he was given rather than underperforming.

Reportedly he has "doesn't play well with others" issues, but I agree that the results suggest he's a really good coach. I feel like he should be at the top of everyone's list.

Only knock would be a defensive coach in an offensive game. Why the Vikes will go after Moore and then someone like Leftwich. I think Bieniemy's stock has fallen.
It seems DeShaun likes Flores! But, I'm not sure I would call Flores's mentor someone that plays well with others, but winning fixes everything except for in Miami, apparently.

And I think Flores wanted Deshaun in Miami badly, but ownership didn't. And that seemed to be the ultimate deal breaker.
Flores had a big problem with staffing. In 3 years he had 3 OL coaches and 3 OCs. That won't cut it.
