Why do people feel it matters what point of the season we play a non-conference game?
Because KU fans put an egregious amount of importance on the regular season conference title.

Hilarious.
We have to generate rivals based on the environment of the sport now that Mizzou is gone. KSU is a joke and is a rival only like how brothers 10 years apart in age have a "rivalry".

If i'm working on a three month long project that is important and pays well, i'm not going to put it on pause for something fairly meaningless comparatively.

I hold the Big 12 conference to be very important and this step out to be on Game Day against Kentucky does not bother me one bit. This was the one home game all season I was most excited to attend when the schedule came out.

I don't mind a break from Big 12 play for this. Maybe the coaches do, I don't know. But since we are KU and always get a fun match up, I enjoy it knowing the big stage it gets put on.

Ask Bill Self if he thinks the Big 12 title is important.

Good answer but......
If we play Kentucky in November or January how does that have a bearing on our conference title?

The break from the conference slate is not nearly as big of a deal now that we aren't trying to break the streak. I think it makes more sense to play this game either the beginning of January right before conference or in February after the Super Bowl for better exposure.

Overall, I'd rather just play UK and get out of the SEC/Big 12 contract.

Adds mileage to our guys during the conference grind, which are usually our most trying games.

Makes sense but.....
Is there a chance that it might actually be beneficial? Here is an example.
Let's say Och and Jalen had nagging injuries after the TTU game. Coach and the medical staff decide it's best for them to rest for a week. They sit out the Kentucky game and we lose. Better than them missing a conference game or two and we lose those games. Yes? No?

Any bumps/bruises/exhaustion + time spent scouting a team you very very likely won't see again.

We have a road game @ Ames on Tuesday night after this Saturday night game.

Sure, in that circumstance, if they were really banged up.
But unless they are really banged up, Self doesn't tend to sit dudes.

Another good answer!
I guess I am either over or under thinking it.

Agreed. I’d love to see both UK and Duke on the schedule every season.

Or, maybe 2 of the following. One a destination Neutral site and the other rotating between home/away.

UK
Duke
Villanova
Gonzaga
UNC
Michigan St

We have only had 1 season in the last 8 where we have not played Kentucky, 2019-2020.

Meh, we get to start the conference schedule a game earlier as a result.

We get five straight games against teams who are not ranked after the road test at Iowa State. Conference schedules and the grinds they are or aren't are mostly due to how lucky you get with the Big 12 scheduling.

"We get five straight games against teams who are not ranked"

The B12 is and has pretty much always been a grind.
Even the unranked teams are top 64 kenpom squads.
Or, if you're using the NCAA's net, road games v all the B12 squads are quad 1 wins.

Oh, I get it. It's just a break relatively speaking. All five of those games are to opponents who could hang an L on Kansas, although West Virginia is looking more and more like just a crappy team this year.

WV always plays better though when there’s a $25,000 bar tab on the line.
