apparently, Asheville has a “unique mix of hipster coffee shops, award-winning restaurants, outdoor activities, and more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the US”

i woulda never guessed the per capita brewery thing

Sounds good. I knew about the brewery thing there. They are pretty well known for that. There's also the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Lots of hiking. Mrs 99 will want to hit the touristy stuff like the Biltmore and antique shops.

My corporate office is in Winston-Salem and everyone here says Asheville is full of artistic hippie liberals.

So, it should be a great place to visit!

Hiking is great, don't remember where we did ours there though.

Bring your dog. They're ubiquitous and allowed pretty much everywhere there.

Our dog is old and fat and would die if we tried to take her hiking.

so I’ve never once checked a bag on a flight.

It’s like not that risky right? Are they gonna loose it like they did to that Gay Focker doode?

Especially if there’s a fee, at what point might it make sense to just ship a box to/from your destination?

I rarely check a bag, mainly because I like to arrive at the airport 15 min before my plane starts boarding.

A buddy of mine flies to Florida a couple of times a year with his kids to see his parents. He ships his luggage UPS ground a week or so before he gets there.

Getting lost can happen, but I think the chances of it go down when your flight is nonstop.

Knock on wood, it’s never happened to me, and I’m no stranger to the air.

I've had luggage delayed (I think it was 3-4 hours) one time. I've probably flown somewhere between 400-500 times.

I do check my luggage at the gate quite a bit because I try to be the last person to board the plane. With a few exceptions, the airports are so efficient these days that by the time you get off the plane, go the restroom and walk to the baggage claim, you rarely wait more that 3-5 minutes for your bag. It's no where near the inconvenience it used to be.

Yeah that’s pretty crazy to me.

Delays in courier services is so common.

Agreed, the UPS's and FedEx's of the world are far more likely to lose or damage your stuff than the airports.

Also, the cost can't be much different these days.

And then if your stuff arrives early, it potentially just sits outside for a day or two in the days of porch pirates? No thanks.

Only take your travel rods and put them in a carry on bag with your reels in the overhead bin or under your seat. You can fish without clean socks and underwear, but you will be pissed if your rods end up in LA for the week you are in Oregon.

Maybe I'm spoiled or lucky (and it's true that probably 95% of my lifetime air travel is SWA), but I just haven't had issues with checked bags.

I have, though, sent things ahead to hotels or offices, but that's different from just sending clothes etc.

Man, couldn't disagree more. I could count bad experiences on one hand, and I fly a fair amount. My only significant issue is with the variety hour flight attendants you sometimes run into.

Only issue? What about (a) the herding of cattle boarding process and (b)the best seats go to those who board first issues.

Both of those are awful

Huh? Bro but I don’t fish. You must have me mistaken for someone else. I’m more of a golfer lulz.

…buuuut if I DID fish, and I was planning on taking a big trip to steelhead country in a couple weeks, of course I’m carrying on my rods. I’d keep them no further than 2 inches from my side until I’ve reached my destination. Honestly, I prob wouldn’t remember the last time I flew WITHOUT a rod or two.

And the last time I did this trip, I just shipped a box with my waders and other gear to my fishing buddy, then back home, and brought a small carryon with some extra undies and a rain jacket, in addition to my rods in travel tubes. But this time, I might just throw it all in one big checked bag.

That is, if I did like fishing instead of hate it and prefer golf cuz now I’m some bizarro world version of myself.

Heck, as a fellow golfer, I’d even like to get out with illy some time, except I’m worried he might smoke too much weed for my taste, cuz I’m not about that either.

Keep that devil’s lettuce off the links! You’re disgracing the game, young man!
