No for real!

I enjoy the dialogue, and feel like I learn more when I’m discussing with someone who brings some completely different point of view about it.

Heck, if I was only looking to validate the same old established beliefs in an echo chamber, I’d just get on Facebook again.

Bad quarterly report. Metaverse lost 8 figures in 2021 and for the first time ever, facebook lost daily users.

The MySpacing of Facebook is gonna be delicious.

…assuming it doesn’t negatively affect my portfolio, cuz all I care about in life is my own money.

Maybe.

That’s basically betting that Facebook isn’t going the way of the dodo.

If they’re loosing users, how they gonna gain them back, and/or attract new ones?

They'll try and figure out how to beat TikTok. Instagram marketplace seems like a growth area, especially towards Gen Z. And, of course, keep fighting with Apple over privacy. There's just an outrageous amount of $ on hand.

And that’s assuming those socialist fascist commies in congress don’t break them up first.

Isn’t Instagram and Facebook “reels” a direct reaction to Tik Tok already?

Just like Instagram and Facebook stories is a direct reaction to Snapchat.

Since capitalism breeds innovation and all.

And does or has anyone used Instagram as a marketplace? Does Zuck get a cut of the sales if an ad directs a buyer to an external commerce site, or just the ad revenue?

I always giggle at how bad Instagram is at suggesting merch to sell me. No Zuck, I’m not in the market for lingerie.

I’m in the market for superyachts, just like you Zuck, duh!

Yes, Reels is a competitor to TikTok. But facebook has had many competitors and they've ended up beating most of them just by being smarter or wealthier.

I think the thing to watch is the interplay between influencers, social media, and marketplace. You might not be the target, and neither am I, but there's a ton of money already there.

“Being smarter or wealthier.” I love that euphemism!

That’s just a nice way of saying they shamelessly sought monopolistic control to buy or bury their competition. And if they couldn’t buy or bury, they just created a carbon copy ripoff of the same feature their competition offered.

What’s the big seller products and services in the marketplace? It’s gotta be more than just fan merch for meme pages and stuff, right?

And “influencer” is such a funny concept. It’s someone posting media about the same shit you’re interested in, but with tits too.

Their metaverse hasn't even launced yet. Between that, and my faith in their ability to quickly adapt to the NFT phenomenon, I think FB still has huge growth potential. FB has always been successful at adapting.

Does anyone plan to be a part of the metaverse, or looking forward to it?

It’s basically the same online shopping experience but now as a cartoon version of yourself, right?

I've thought about the whole Ready Player One quite a bit in the last couple of months (my 17 year old bought an Oculus, and then we bought another one a few weeks later). We're not there, and we're not too close...yet. 10 years seems a little too quick, but with NVIDIA's GeForce Now and others providing high-end, cloud-based graphic engines, it's quite possible within my lifetime. I do think we'd have to see faster than 1gb internet speeds (probably 10gb to support the bandwidth) to fully adopt it...but yeah, it's going to happen. And probably the results will be eerily similar.

The goggles will also have to be lighter and have a much longer battery life - but if you offload the bulk of the processing to 'the cloud', the battery life issue becomes much easier to solve.
