If you don't drink I think a cruise might make more sense.

I'm heading to a resort in Punta Cana tomorrow. I've never been to a resort since I stopped drinking. It's going to be weird.

Sun, ocean, pool, good food.
Should still be worth it.
Better find a spot to watch us win Thursday through Saturday.

Yeah, I probably left out what might be the only thing that attracts me to a cruise: seeing 2, 3, 4 different countries in one trip.

Only other thing I can think of that a cruise beats a resort at is the shows--pretty legit relatively, and free.

I'm not really a resort type person, either. The food is just too important to us to consider most resorts and cruises.

I normally rent a car so I can go do my own thing and that means if I'm not digging the food options at the resort, I can explore the local scene.

But i've been to several resorts where the food is so good, you don't have to leave.

They have a "sports bar" there, have already told the wife and friends that I'll be parked there several hours

Yeah, I'm a 3/10 on food (and that might be a tick high). Not an important part of any trip for me.

im not sure you could pay me to go on a cruise. Trapped.

Not a big resort guy either. More of a "find a house rental, somewhere near the vicinity of where I'm trying to go, roll the dice and see where the trip takes me" sort of a vacationer. I dont like hard set itineraries that don't leave room for random side trips. Oftentimes the random, unplanned, side trips end up being the high lights of the whole vacation.

My approach kinda, sorta, drives the wife crazy though. I have to plan all the time at work.....I dont wanna plan on vacation too, I just wanna get there and see where it goes.

We did one a few years ago, to the Bahamas. Five day cruise. I think we spent a total of 9 hours actually on the ground in the Bahamas. Boat was boring. I hated it but it wasn't a huge boat and it was Carnival. Maybe a bigger, better boat would be fun but I'd rather hang at the destination.

Mrs 99 is making noises that she wants to go to Myrtle Beach. Anyone been? Looks like Branson with a beach to me.

lol

My aunt has a place down there. Goes a lot. My fam met up with their fam at least once there growing up. Ya it’s pretty much Branson with a beach.

I think the appeal is that it’s like Florida, but an easier drive from MI than Florida.

And it’s like Florida’s weird little brother (think like Reno is to Vegas)

Tho to be fair, Reno’s actually pretty cool. Serviceable college town, plus Tahoe's right there. I digress.

Didn’t illy spend time working at a golf course in myrtle beach?

My aunt in SE Michigan wanted a place on the beach, and didn’t wanna have to go all the way to Florida for it, so myrtle beach it was.

Just googled it and it’s still like a 12+ hour drive.

I’m not saying it makes sense to me either

To each her own, but my threshold is 3.5 hours, anything over and I am taking a (nonstop) bird.

Why I hate having to go places like Tulsa/OKC. No good way around the 5 hour drive.

And yes, I have done plenty of the 12-15 hour drives. I am completely on board with developing high speed rail here.

It's 10 hours to KC from here. I do that a few times a year. It's ok.

Going to Minneapolis is 13, that's a bit much. I usually fly.

I love to do road trips. That same one to KC is getting old though.

Louisville/Lex are hard choices from KC because you have to go through Chicago to fly. I'm doing it next month and did consider driving but the $79 one way fares to SDF were just too cheap to pass up.

sometimes I have more fun on the drive than at the destination. That is never the case on a plane. If I never fly again it'll be too soon.

Yeah, I was thinking that one of the issues with driving from KC is that, pretty much any direction you go, you have 3+ solid hours of crap scenery/drive to start out.
