Re: next soccer question
I mean sure. But this teams form away from home is atrocious. They better play all their friendlies outside of the US. They way they turtle up and just automatically go for a draw on away soil is so fucking minor league it’s ridiculous. From the organization, to the staff to the players. They’re happy with draws on the road. Go fucking try to win. Look at what some of the top UEFA teams have to play against in their qualifications. Teams with small stadiums, shitty fields but not great talent. Those top notch teams go in and crush them. We did that once against Honduras. The fact we can’t win on the road against Jamaica, El Salvador, Panama and even fucking Canada is preposterous. Mexico has their worst team in a long time and we turtle like fucking cowards because “Azteca” No fuck that. We are better than you and we are going to beat you.
They won 1 game off of US soil. They are an incorrectly decided disallowed Jamaica goal from being in 4th place.
The form of this team is soooo bad. They need to play friendlies against top notch competition this summer. There’s no other way of putting it. Or else we’re looking at a group exit and another wasted World Cup.
Our tactics of overloading the wings and putting through cross after helpless cross is our only way of attack and it’s so easy to defend. But yet, that’s what our failed 2nd division Swedish league coach getting paid $1.3M wants to do. I’ve never seen fullbacks used as much as Greggggggggg uses them. And he loves to sub them out too. Imagine using a sub every game on that position. Pathetic management of the roster. Pathetic lack of creativity. Pathetic celebrations for getting into the World Cup on goal difference alone.
Fuck that.
We are wasting this fucking talent.

Re: next soccer question
Kind of how I feel too Newton. I'd almost rather lose trying to win than to draw when not really even trying to win.
Re: next soccer question
In some cases, I disagree, depending on the point of the stage and how your position is in it.
But in this case, where you aren't going to loose 6-0, and you could potentially finish first ( though unlikely ), you go for the win.
I didn't watch last night so I can't comment on how we played.

That was a tremendous rant Newton.
After the frustration of 2018, I decided that it’s just not worth it for me to invest any time into USMNT until and unless they advance out of WC pool play. Just too frustrating, like KUFB, except I actually feel emotionally attached to KUFB.

Re: next soccer question
The first 15 minutes were great. Hard shots on goal. Navas made some great saves. After that, it was complete garbage. Defense was completely lost on the 2 goals. First goal Acosta didn't mark his man, and Zimmerman completely whiffed on the clearing header. The second goal was on a scramble and Yedlin stood at the 6 yard line with no fucking clue of what was going on.
We have such a small 3rd world country mindset when it comes to soccer.
"We're going to play an outdoor game in Minnesota in February because the elements." Fuck that.
"We didn't play that well because of the surface" Fuck that. As Taylor Twellman pointed out 4 years ago, Belgium smoked Bosnia and they played on a cow pasture.
"Mission accomplished" Fuck that. You said your goal was to finish 1 or 2 in the group. You failed in that aspect.
"Verticality on the outsides" Fuck that. Use your best pieces, Pulisic, Reyna, McKennie, Adams, Musah and work from the middle and don't rely on Antonee Robinson and Sergio Dest to do all the work for you.

Re: next soccer question
I'm as excited as ever. The World Cup is the top sporting event in the world and I think we have a good shot on our talent alone. It's just that this World Cup is a waste if Greggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg is leading the charge. Which is going to happen because the Federation is too scared to make a change to somebody like Jesse Marsch, Tata Martino, Oscar Pareja or even Tab Ramos who was good with the U-20s for like 8 years.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 8:15 am That was a tremendous rant Newton.

I am also excited.
We have a good collection of talent - I think we can get out of the group.
The draw is tomorrow night, no?

Sucks if it is another wasted WC. And makes me wonder if having the WC every 2-3 years makes it easier for me and other fringe fans to follow the progress. Might even mean taking more chances on younger guys.

Re: next soccer question
11am Hawk Time. 7pm Qatar time.
There should be no true "Group of Death" Poland is the most dangerous Pot 3 team because of Lewy. But US is better than probably everyone in Pot 3. Teams in Pot 3 are Iran, South Korea, Serbia, Morocco, Senegal, Japan, Tunisia and Poland.
The ideal group for US would be Qatar, US, Tunisia and one of the playoff teams.

Re: next soccer question
So here's the thing. Having the US in the World Cup is HUGE for soccer in this country. Lots of kids will be watching. Going to grow the sport. The thing that hurts the US is there's no real true major competition they are apart of outside of the World Cup. UEFA has the Euros, South America has the Copa America. We have the Gold Cup which is an extension of WC Qualifying basically.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 9:08 amFor sure--definitely not trying to gatekeep your excitement. I would contend that there is no such thing as wasted World Cup when you qualify for it. 2018 was a wasted World Cup.

Plus, American sports fans hate ties, and want to see their teams play for trophies. And not just any trophies, the yugest trophies.

Re: next soccer question
Compared to the alternative, it's great.
But man, the path it took to get there with the horrendous results away from home and the style of play is discouraging.

I know that 2006 was pretty shitty with the opening beat down from Czech and the ( holy shit what an awful penalty kick call on Onweyu ) elimination loss to Ghana - but I still remember that red card laden tie with Italy with blood streaming down McBride's face.

Re: next soccer question
World Cup qualifying is a pass/fail course. Either you qualify or you don't. There is no correlation between where you finish in qualifying and World Cup performance. In 2006, the USA won the CONCACAF qualifying group and earned a whole 1 point in the World Cup. In 2002, the USA was the last team in from CONCACAF and made it to the quarterfinals. In fact, they should have been in the semifinals after that horrendous uncalled handball on Germany.pdub wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 10:05 amThis.UnholyLivingDead wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 9:32 am I would contend that there is no such thing as wasted World Cup when you qualify for it. 2018 was a wasted World Cup.

Landon Donovan had 2 great shots against Oliver Kahn but Kahn was just so good that tournament.
