So HyVee grocery stores just laid off over 100 employees when it cut back it's "Aisles Online" program. HyVee in the meantime is suffering a worker shortage in their stores because either "people don't want to work any more" or "people don't want to work for HyVee". The HyVee CEO Randy Edeker had this to say about the IT and marketing department employees who didn't accept new jobs offered stocking the shelves and working the cash registers.

"Our retail stores are the heart of Hy-Vee, and some people just simply see it being beneath them to work at the retail stores. I think it's crazy, and I think that it's offensive," Edeker said in a video the Register reviewed.

Then again some people can't afford a big pay cut and with the number of better paying jobs out there it their field, why would they? No word yet on wether or not Edeker will accept a shelf stocking job when he leaves the CEO office.

I have told this story elsewhere, but...

...the GM of a reasonably-nice place I find myself at a fair amount told me a few weeks ago that limited kitchen hours were because they can't find enough cooks. "What am I supposed to do when McDonald's is paying $20 an hour," he lamented.

And traditional unemployment tends to be limited, and be worth only a fraction of the peanuts you can make actually working.

it’s less suppling the gummint teat (unless you the Bills), and more things like retirement, or you just moved on to a better job, or it just makes more financial sense to stay home with yer kids, or your workforce was likely among the million-plus who have died, etc.

So yeah, sorry HyVee, it’s less that “people just simply see it being beneath them to work at the retail stores,” and more that people simply see it being beneath them to work for the shit wages offered.

Or rather, if actually competitive living wages WERE offered, maybe even people would no longer view retail work as being beneath them

The Qusdahl meme pages are rich with anecdotes from the service industry about job postings that avoid listing the compensation, or interviews that avoid mentioning it too, or even job offers that say “I know the listing says we pay up to $20 an hour, but the key term there is up to, cuz actually new hires only get $8”
