2022-2023 Lineup
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
DH more than likely isn't coming off the bench. I think we established that this year.
They could play together. Or he could do the Remy role.
Is he significantly better than Remy? And if so, why isn't he going pro?

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I don't doubt they can play together. But if CB and Jalen are back, someone's gotta come off the bench, and Dick isn't going to be coming off the bench. So, yeah, would be Davis or Juan.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
And strangely enough, I am good with that. Wouldn't have said that 12months ago. He's not "my type" of PG. I prefer a scoring PG, but he's got a unique skill set and is tough as nails. Calm under pressure for the most part. Understands his role. And maybe most importantly understands what Self wants from him.
Prior to this year I have always kind of leaned towards wanting sure fire pros at the PG Wing and C spot. But those guys often aren't multi year players and it just seems like Self does better when he's got a team full of veterans. I also think it is much easier to win a national title with a team full of 3 and 4 year players. At least for Self. A young team folds against UNC. This team had the experience and understanding of the situations to take it 1 possession at a time and chip away at the lead without making costly mistakes that are much tougher to avoid with younger players who have a tendency to get sped up.
Always need a combination of both (vets and NBA prospects). But we just won with a roster (NBA talent wise) that wasn't as talented as a handful of other teams.

SF: Gradey Dick, Sunrise Christian (Bel Aire, Kan.), 2022
College: Kansas
Why He’s an SI All-American: Dick led the NIBC in scoring, averaging 17.9 points a game to go along with 5.2 rebounds. He shot a blistering 47% from the three-point line and dominated the practices at the McDonald’s All American game, widely regarded as the most competitive aspect of the all star game’s festivities.

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Because of the jokes, more than any player we are going to hope Dick is one and done. In and out, if you will.jfish26 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:16 amSTOP IT

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I think this team was one of Self's toughest he's ever had here. So many of Self's teams, even more talented ones, would have folded under pressure several times in this run. And I do think Dajuan was a huge part of that. Been an underdog his entire life.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 7:25 amI prefer a scoring PG, but he's got a unique skill set and is tough as nails.

Agreed. It's the reason we were able to win so many close games, as well as pull off a couple of HUGE comebacks.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:35 amI think this team was one of Self's toughest he's ever had here. It's no coincidence that some of our toughest teams are also the teams that had the most tournament success.

this team has also faced a ton of adversity not related to opponents

(Not disagreeing just drawing a blank, other than Self's dad dying which likely impacted him moreso than the players themselves)

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
With the way the team was playing on both sides of the ball at the end, I don't have a problem now putting this team ahead of teams like '11, '17, '16. Just getting to the F4 I probably already had it over '12 and '18.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Some of that comes with experience.
Starters were three third-year guys and two fourth-year guys, 6th-8th guys were 5th, 6th, and 7th year players. That's ridiculously experienced and old for a top 10 program.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
'12 never really stopped being a fluke team. That's the direction this one was going, until Remy became REMY. Then this team became not just what was expected in October/November, but something better, because it had to navigate the conference season (and get a 1!) without REMY.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:45 am With the way the team was playing on both sides of the ball at the end, I don't have a problem now putting this team ahead of teams like '11, '17, '16. Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Remy came into his own.
But so did Dave.
So did DH
So did JW
CB and Och were so solid all year, so i will leave them out.

But I guess what I mean is that some unknowable portion of the team's growth was because Remy wasn't as advertised. Until he was.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 12:23 pm Remy came into his own.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
We had all of those guys in the conference season. Remy was the only addition--leading scorer in the tournament.
And, as was said prior to the entire season, Remy had something none of them have.

I also think there is something to the fact that Remy didn't come here as the player he was the last month. He and Self both needed time together. Self to learn how to use Remy. And Remy to learn how to play winning "team" basketball on a squad where he wasn't option 1. The fact they accomplished that in 1 single season (with a short summer together due to draft stuff) is a testament to both Self AND Remy.
It was a perfect storm and a perfect marriage. For the 1st time in a LONG time we accomplished all 3 preseason goals. Win conference regular season. Win conference tournament. Win national title.
