Sure, it's possible. But that's not the point. What Parrish said is absolutely not a "fact".
Jay Wright Stepping Down

Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
Or once the finals are over he will be named the Lakers Knicks or maybe Nets new head coach and it'll all make a lot more sense.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
I would be stunned if that happened. If I was 60 with millions in the bank I'd retire, too. "Work to live" not "live to work" and all.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 10:08 am Or once the finals are over he will be named the Lakers Knicks or maybe Nets new head coach and it'll all make a lot more sense.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
until HCJW makes a statement, everyone is just speculating. basketball writers. internet knowitalls. all speculation. we won't know what his motivations were/are until he tells us.
HCJW has been around for a long time. the game has changed. on and off the court. it's entirely possible that he has had enough.

It wasn't too long ago Self thought that would be the route he took.
But winning and working at Kansas is a addictive I am sure. And I have to imagine until a few weeks ago that he felt like he had serious unfinished business at KU. That 2nd title solidifies his legacy. Not that it "needed" solidifying, but there is a long list of coaches with 1 title...not many with 2.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
It's obvious that he has had enough or he'd still be their coach. I doubt that he tells us much at all in any upcoming statement he makes. Maybe it will be squeezed out of him over time by persistent media members.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
He can work probably 90% less and take a job talking about basketball for a very good salary.

Of course it is.
Which is anecdotal. The writers and people wanting to make this about themselves are the ones that are trying to say this is evidence of a failing sport.
Every college sport now has NIL. Both CFB and CBB finally allowed free transfer when every other sport had been allowing that forever.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
High-major coaching is a ridiculously taxing profession. It's only getting harder. Wright is walking away a wealthy man. And a seemingly healthy and content man.
This should be applauded. He's a goddamn king. I'd probably do the exact same thing were I fortunate enough to be in his shoes (and fortunate is the wrong word, he's a tremendously gifted coach, obviously a hard worker, a skilled people person, and so on).
But what he's not is some sort of moral compass for the sport, someone you should look up to if you personally do not like the direction of the sport, and you're searching for kindred spirits.
He's not going to give up his money. If he coaches again at a lower, "purer" level, he'll do so with the financial security he earned through 20 years of playing in the mud with the pigs. If he goes the TV route, then he'll continue to make money off the sport (perhaps 10-20% of his Villanova salary, with 1-2% of the effort/stress).
What he's doing is perfectly rational.
But what it's not, is a genuine moral stand. A protest resignation.
It's a choice, made in his self-interest. And he has, and has earned, the right to make it.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
Didn't even see this when I wrote the post above.
Yes, he can. And should that be what he does, it will tell you all you need to know about what his motivations are, and what they are not.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
My gut tells me NBA...but he wanted to get this out there now for draft entry declarations and transfers as a courtesy to Nova and his successor.
And if it's NBA the team will want the "splash" to come after the finals when he can get more media attention.
But again, totally a guess. Maybe ESPN offered him a bunch of money. But that'll require working nights and weekends and moving his personal residence.

Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
I trust Wojnarowski's reporting that NBA is not on Wright's mind at all.
Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
There's a word for the sort of folks who will giddily gobble up, at face value, whatever it is that Wright might have to say about the state of the sport: rubes.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 10:17 amOf course it is.

No. It's not that. And the writers aren't arguing it is.
But once again, the pub analogy.
If you're the best bartender at the pub, and a big reason why a lot of people come back because you're such a good bartender, but then the pub becomes a stock market whiskey bar with 19 dollar cocktails and a new menu with deviled eggs, maybe you stay there for a bit, but then maybe you realize, it's just not for you.
You're not quitting as some sort of moral stance. It's just not your scene. Off to something new.

Re: Jay Wright Stepping Down
Wright hasn't been successful the last 20 years without doing EXACTLY the same type of stuff Self K Roy Cal etc etc etc have been doing. I just don't think that's realistic. He isn't THAT good of a coach, recruiter, player developer.

Is that analogy intended as an exaggeration or do you really think it's that different?

The Philly columnist: "Truths about how the college basketball game had changed. How it had become less about teaching proper pick-and-pop techniques, less about posting his point guards on the blocks, less about frenetic help defenses whose clockwork rotations made five decent athletes elite team defenders against the best the NBA would have to offer in that June’s draft."
That is exactly what the Villanova team was this season when they were a 2-seed that made the Final Four. Collin Gillispie played 5 seasons at Villanova. In Jay's last game, the only transfer that played meaningful minutes was Remy Martin, who was a grad transfer due to COVID.
What change is he talking about for Jay? Yes, a rube.

jfish is bout to get a cane or walker upside his head
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?
