I think one of the biggest headaches for college coaches, especially in basketball, is that athletes have too many people in their ears that are bad for them. That's existed for a long time now. The portal is not a good marriage with that aspect.

Don't worry guys.
Nothing to see here.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... -increased

"Miami Hurricanes guard Isaiah Wong will enter the transfer portal on Friday if his name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation isn't increased, his NIL agent, Adam Papas of NEXT Sports Agency, told ESPN on Thursday.

"If Isaiah and his family don't feel that the NIL number meets their expectations they will be entering the transfer portal tomorrow, while maintaining his eligibility in the NBA draft and going through the draft process," Papas said.

"Isaiah would like to stay at Miami," Papas said. "He had a great season leading his team to the Elite Eight. He has seen what incoming Miami Hurricane basketball players are getting in NIL and would like his NIL to reflect that he was a team leader of an Elite Eight team.'"

Comments like that are supposed to be against the rules iirc.

Why even have rules if nobody has to follow them?

These new rules were supposed to be more enforceable. I thought stuff like this was supposed to be a clear violation?

It has been a shit show for a LONG time. Coaches on wiretaps in criminal trials.

I still agree with NIL.

I watched coaches cry after winning and losing last night. Players cry after winning and losing last night. The idea that players don't "care" as much because they are getting paid is false imo. Bill Self gets paid a lot of money to coach at Kansas. I think he loves Kansas an awful lot. It doesn't ruin some fantasy "purity" for me.

I don't want the schools themselves paying players. I don't want it to be free agency bidding wars via NIL to entice commitments. Those things are supposed to be against the rules. And they should be.

and as the person who constantly reminds us that the rules were never being followed I find it hard to believe you think that changing the rules will make one bit of difference in regards to boundaries being pushed.

I think it muddied the waters even more, pretty tough to punish anyone for anything at this point. Before it was all disallowed (supposedly).

We disagree and its fine. But you can't keep harping on rules keeping this in check AND be the flag bearer for the rules have always been broken team.

This is ridiculous. Get rid of scholarships all together. Hold open tryouts for all enrolled students and field the best 13 man team. Make college sports about the STUDENT.

This sarcastic comment doesn't work though.
The scholarship is kind of a big reason why was collegiate sports.
It gave value to the school and the classes. Now the value has nothing to do with the school and classes and is more about how much cash I can put in my pocket, right now, instead of learning ( and I don't mean just college courses but more learning at a collegiate athletic program ).

It is a fair point.

I wish the old rules had been followed too.

I wish the old rules had been fixed 20 years ago when it was obvious that they needed to be fixed. It's why we need new leadership in the NCAA; they are always 20 years behind and only make changes when forced.

It is hard to fix things from an office building when a decent portion of the sport is actively working to undermine the rules (coaching staffs, sponsors/boosters, and players).

These new rules should be easier to enforce. NIL contract negotiations have paper trails. Contracts are signed, etc.

Again, there's just a lot of noise on the bleeding edge here. I have no idea what "normal" will be, but all of this will find an equilibrium.

wondering if there's any discussion worth having about prohibitive rules vs regulatory.

If boosters want to pay stupid amounts of money to athletes at their favorite schools, then I am having trouble identifying who is being "harmed" by it?

No one is really being "harmed" by it.
Just like no one was really being "harmed" before it.

It's just becoming less unique and more like professional basketball.
And I can already watch a better version of that.
