Food shortages driven by war and climate change are making it harder for many people around the world to feed their families. And now the price of yet another cooking staple is skyrocketing. According to the UN, global cooking oil prices rose 23 percent in March. They had already been at record highs in February.

Historic drought across South America is causing dramatic declines in soybean oil production. Drought is also forcing Canadian farmers to shift away from canola crops. And an export ban on palm oil from Indonesia (the world’s largest producer) is putting an even tighter squeeze on the world’s oil supply. In the US this means paying more for staples like mayonnaise and salad dressing. But in developing regions, the cost is much greater for people with less reliable access to food...

i used to tell DC that this is exactly why the US should view itself as being in an enviable position if only it would embrace it

we should be doing more to lead, and help other countries move away from such archaic ways by being more open to collaboration and the sharing of greener technologies

nah, my intent was a more of "throwing my hands up" heres an article. We have no easy way out. The solutions require a global coordination which doesn't and can't exist. My frustration is that the country has us at each others throats about straws, and electric vehicles etc...the blame is placed on the consumer. We are pawns, the planning isn't there. We can be the best stewards possible and the result isn't guaranteed. Not only is it not guaranteed, it is damn near unachievable. We (American citizens) can do every single thing potentially asked and still end up in essentially the same predicament.

Every country has, and will, always do whatever necessary to meet its own immediate requirements. Any additional intentions, however good, will fall by the wayside the moment the struggle is pushed onto those in control. Appeasement is the ultimate pillow for those in charge.

in some positive news...heard a weather podcast yesterday that indicated that we're in the middle of an ocean current shift that occurs every 30ish years. Should create more La nina conditions and bring cooler wetter summer weather to the west US. Downside being it also brings more severe weather and is associated with an increase in big hurricanes in the Atlantic.
