F the NCAA
Re: F the NCAA
man, but I enjoyed these boreds so much more before you got that money to host them.
All this time, I thought you were just doing it for the love of the posts.

Re: F the NCAA
That post is awful.
I give it an F ( like JFish gave the NCAA ).
Dunno what CR would give it.

Re: F the NCAA
that post is awful, eh?
guess I'd be better off doubling down on some weird space between "but I swear it didn't USED to be lips and assholes" and "but I swear now it just tastes like açaí bowls"

Re: F the NCAA
if we wanna be as ideologically pure about college hoops as possible, I think we'd be best to forego other opportunities and move back to Lawrence just for the sake of attending every home game. I seriously consider it on the reg.
check out this pic of me pregame walking up and down Naismith trying to score a seat...hey now!

Re: F the NCAA
The post is awful because the analogy makes zero sense.
I put in a number of hours unpaid - so yes, I was pretty much literally doing it for the love of the posts.
On top of that, I was paying out of pocket to host the site.
If I had already been collecting money to pay for the hosting and then added a mandatory subscription fee, pre roll video, flashing banner ads ( whoopsies JFish ) and surveys, then your analogy would work better.

Re: F the NCAA
ok, so it's not quite so apples to apples.
but if that's the case, then so is claiming that legitimizing the college sports market suddenly turned the on-court product from bbq to açaí.

Re: F the NCAA
For me it has ( well, maybe not that extreme, more like your favorite BBQ place stopped serving burnt ends, brisket and ribs, got rid of all the sauces and only does pulled pork and chicken - but now also has acai bowls! ).
But for many the BBQ got better!
But for many the BBQ got better!
Re: F the NCAA
You should really just back off the stupid ideological soapbox, and think about what you're advocating for here.pdub wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 7:58 am "Will this lead to schools offering contracts to athletes someday? That is one outcome I see as not only possible, but preferable."
Yea, that's a big whiff for me Jay.
"1. NIL is here to stay. 2. Get used to it."
1. Sure, no doubt.
2. I don't have to get used to anything.
"Hey, your favorite BBQ restaurant stopped serving BBQ. They do acai bowls now. Get used to it."
"Or, I can just not go there nearly as often, no?"
"People who perform services entering into contracts that govern the services they perform, and what they get in return? Yea, that's a big whiff for me."
That's a very silly thing to say or think! A very silly thing that is also inconsistent with how pretty much everything works!
Re: F the NCAA
Which was, ah, back when, um...young, generally-powerless people, disproportionately drawn from particular socioeconomic backgrounds, performed valuable services in exchange for room and board.
Seems, how to say, regressive.
Or, nostalgic for an...um...different time.
Re: F the NCAA
This is just so silly and confused.pdub wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 8:42 amIt's possible this last season might be the last one I think fondly of.NDballer13 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 8:31 am I thouroughly enjoyed the 2021-22 men's basketball season. Start to finish. Hell, football was great. Even the CWS was exciting.
But, that's just me I guess.
Before 300k NIL contracts for everyone and 1 mill for the one and dones ( not pay for play I promise ) which led to college kids getting paid by universities to play sports which led to a power 64 league which led to salary caps.
Senior David McCormack, B12 Scholar Athlete of the Year, hits the game winner in the national title, on a squad with two local upperclassmen, one of whom rose to become a 1st team AA.
I agree this last season was awesome.
It also - every single minute of it, every bounce of the ball during it - happened in the NIL era.
Isn't this proof that the cool stuff just isn't disturbed by NIL? Again, NIL can ONLY ruin things for you if you choose to let it.
Re: F the NCAA
Is college basketball better off, or worse off, when the NPOY decides to come back and play more college basketball?pdub wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 8:46 amThis argument that posters keep coming back to does not work for me.
I don't think it was nearly at the level it was now.
Ayton, a one and done NBA for sure who was picked 1st over all, got 100k, was at the end of this.
Tshiewbwe, who may not have been drafted until very late 2nd, just got 2 mill.
If that doesn't help explain why the "its ALWAYS BEEN HAPPENING" argument is useless to bring up when arguing with me, then I can't help you ( and I'll bookmark this post to refer to it in the future ).
Re: F the NCAA
College sports stopped being about students playing sports a long time ago. It turned into athletes playing sports for a college to generate income for said college and also for entertainment purposes for students alumni and faculty.
Re: F the NCAA
Lol.
"Sure, the 19th-ranked guy got $100,000 to go to Kansas, and the 16th-ranked guy was offered $150,000 to go to Oklahoma State. How is anyone to possibly guess at what the 2nd-ranked guy might have got??? It's a mystery."
Re: F the NCAA
And yet, there's time to harass posters who call out your silliness, by making the board nearly unreadable for them.
27 .gifs and counting here, on every single post on the board. A perfectly rational, measured response.
Re: F the NCAA
It's been one year of NIL.
I don't think it really had a chance to get cookin ( fucking up college basketball ) last season.

Re: F the NCAA
Again, a silly and confused way of thinking about things.pdub wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 9:42 amBecause college sports was unique.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 9:37 amTotally fair stance to take.
Honest question: why do Chiefs players being paid not bother you, but Kansas basketball players does?
I still think Mahomes loves the Chiefs.
Och got paid last year, he still seems to love KU just as much as anyone who came here for free.
I don't think the money eliminates the love.
And now it is not.
I'm from Lawrence. Went to KU. My rents heavily involved with KU. KUBB is a big deal.
Call me naive, but I actually think players came to Kansas largely for reasons other than money.
I don't think that will be the case anymore.
And the NBA is, in the end, a better product on the court ( the fans, tradition, history etc, I don't think your typical NBA fan gives a shit about that - a lot of KU fans do - I think some of that slowly goes away with contracts and B12 being broken up and salary caps etc ), so I already have a favorite team in a league full of professionals.
And I do think the money spoils the love.
Doesn't eliminate it.
College sports are unique for many, many reasons other than their very gross history of obvious exploitation.
Let's think about some of those reasons that are still very much true, even as college sports is finally correcting course on how the money flows:
* Small cities/towns/regions/states having powerful teams
* Venues that are not luxury boxes/premium seating first, second and third, and places to watch a game fourth or fifth
* Student sections
* Shared experiences across generations, going far beyond the action on the field/court
* Major recruiting/revenue/expansion driver for the universities
* Strengthens connections among alumni (uh, this board notwithstanding I guess)
Re: F the NCAA
Hey, it's silly to you, I get it.
I've explained why it is not silly to me.
Not sure we'll see eye to eye on this one my man.

Re: F the NCAA
Again, you - you - are choosing - choosing - to take NIL so personally.
You are choosing to like something less because the labor is now getting paid.
Disgusting.
