Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Who on this team is gonna break down the defense off the dribble and get to the rim or create?
Can McMullar or dick be that guy? Jalen can drive to rim. Not really dajuans game
Might be where yesefu has a chance to carve out a big role

Yes
Bobby
All 3 will be working hard on that this summer.

“Not really Dejuan’s game”
I think it’s more his game than you, specifically, make it out to be.

There is a reason Self likes DH so much. He must be an extremely hard worker to have earned so much love and trust from Self. I think DH will be an improved player from last season.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
yea.
Self LOVES guards who can't shoot.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Didn't Harris win us a game by breaking down the defense and getting to the rim for a last second score vs. Iowa State? It may not be "his game" as he isn't going to be Frank Mason doing it 10 times a game but it doesn't mean it isn't something that he isn't capable and trustworthy to do.randylahey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 8:09 pm Who on this team is gonna break down the defense off the dribble and get to the rim or create?

I don't believe that a team needs "that guy". Last year's team didn't have one guy who always did that. Frankly they probably won it all in large part because they didn't have one guy who everyone knew would get the ball down 1 late. Every starter on the team hit big buckets late to win us games at some point in the season.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
you and I owe both know its not. He isn't very explosive and defenses are not that concerned about his outside shooting. not exactly a recipe for a guard who attacks the paint.
but yes, dajuan is a smart crafty player. he can pick his spots and get in there and create some
but. when the defense is locking us down, he ain't the guy I'm going to want to rely on to break down his man and get something

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I mean he found an opening and made a little layup at the end of the game. It was a good play. it was clutch. but that isn't always going to work out that way.twocoach wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 8:44 amDidn't Harris win us a game by breaking down the defense and getting to the rim for a last second score vs. Iowa State? Last year's team absolutely had "that guy".... we actually had (at least) 2 of them. Remy and Och could both be "that guy". good teams have to have "that guy"
but i get what you mean, you don't want to be too predictable and rely on one guy too much

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
But we all know dajuan aint "that guy"
with that said, I'm really excited to see his improvement. He's such a good natural true point. He doesn't have high end physical tools or skills, but I do love the way he plays the game. smart heady player. We keep surrounding him with talent, based on the recent recruiting we will (this is KU of course we will), and he's going to keep excelling and helping us win a lottttt of games the next couple seasons

I think you’re gonna be surprised/upset.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
It's shocking to say, but they did. That guy was Dave. I remember multiple times during the season being so pissed we were forcing it to Dave late.
And then we forced it to Dave late against UNC and he won us a national title.
He was robbed of final 4 MOP. Och should have declined the award.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Well not always as Ochai was that guy too.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Randy’s a fucking caveman but he’s not wrong about Harris. Some of you are too emotional about KU players. Take it up with your therapist.
Harris is fine, but he’s not breaking down defenses and being The Guy when we need crunch time buckets.
Not sure if we will have that guy this season but I’m sure will try to let Wilson play that role early.

Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Go look through the results from last year. We only had maybe 1 or 2 games where something like we are talking about was remotely necessary. Outside of the Iowa State winning shot by Harris, the next big "that guy" shot was a three by Braun to break a tie with 13 seconds left @OU. The big Texas OT game to win the Big 12? From after Wilson's made shot with 5:49 left in regulation to the end of OT, KU made TWO baskets and 13 free throws.randylahey wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 10:53 amI mean he found an opening and made a little layup at the end of the game. The need for "that guy" is vastly overrated as a thing. Good teams with great coaches figure out how to get good looks.
Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
Our coach has consistently drawn up great plays when KU needs crunch time buckets. Few coaches in the sport have a better record than Self in ""crunch time close plays" and in close games overall. Needing "that guy" to break down a defense is mostly a need for teams that don't have coaches good enough to design, practice and call up a winning play that the team can execute with a decent percentage chance of performing successfully.Cascadia wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 1:47 pm Randy’s a fucking caveman but he’s not wrong about Harris. Re: 2022-2023 Lineup
I just don't see any actual evidence of self trying to force it to be Dave. He had no more late game looks than any of the other starters. Braun, Agbaji, Wilson, Harris and McCormack all had plays where they ended up as the scorer late. DMac did have a few late game turnovers/offensive fouls that maybe stick in the mind to poison the opinion of him late (Dayton and ISU) but he actually took very few shots in the last two minutes of any close games during the regular season.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 1:49 pmAt times he was. But Self always wanted it to be Dave. And we found out why in the last 2 minutes of one of the three biggest KU games of the last 3+ decades.
