Seems doubtful.

Although he seemingly can guard all 5 spots against most teams.

(I also have no clue how you determined what position he was playing based on those clips...he throws a nice oop to a big, but he could be the 4 in that lineup. Hard to tell who is on which team... in that particular clip, imo, it appears he is playing the 4 with JW as the 3.)
The 4 that throws an entry pass from the corner, relocates to the wing, then throws an alley after driving middle. Call him a wing or a 4, but he's clearly going to be playing outside as Self has indicated.

This is why I don't engage with you. You're dumber than pdub.
Some people still can’t see how the modern game is played. Still stuck on archaic position labels.

Said this so many times, KU primarily plays 1 ball handler, 3 wings and 1 big.

Seems like you're also stuck on position labels....

So oblivious.

And just because you say something "so many times" doesn't mean you're right. I know from experience.

If some of you were half as smart/knowledgeable about basketball as you think you are you'd make an elite D1 basketball coach. Unfortunately you're not, so stick to the day jobs...

"Said this so many times, KU primarily plays 1 ball handler, 3 wings and 1 big"

Even if the ball handler and 3 wings was correct, and that your 'archaic position label' meant anything really, you'd be still using an 'archaic position label' in 'big'.

Post fits better.

I'm beating this horse to death, but I get serious Mark Vital vibes with KJ.

Self primarily plays the best combination of 5 players he can find and doesn't give a single fuck what the position ratio is

The 1 ball handler 3 wings 1 big was true last season. Doesnt mean it will be this year. Self will tinker with lineups until he finds what he thinks gives us the best chance to win

It has been this way for 6 straight seasons.

i.e. ever since Perry left and Bill hung out with The Mayor all summer and changed his offense afterwards.

2021 there was the whole Isaiah Todd deal ( who knows with that ).
2020 we missed on Precious Achiuwa.
2019 was set for Dedric and Dok but Dok got hurt.
Billy Preston was a 5 star forward and supposed to be part of the 18 squad.
17 started and was intended to be Bragg and Lucas but Bragg underperformed.

Some of this is Self's style of course but we've had some bad luck when it comes to bigs recently.

randy is correct - Self will find what he thinks gives us the best chance to win.

Silvio was late to the party in 18, and also got the kiss of death when we coulda used him in 19, but ended up going full knucklehead anyway, which then ruined what little rep he had to begin with

Diallo was kept in limbo over 6th grade report carts too

Frank and Devonte were in the last 6 seasons.

He also tried to play DMac and Dok together a few seasons ago.

It's not a philosophy thing. It's a personnel thing. Imo.

He did go through a 2 ballhandler phase and even acknowledged it after the 2014 debacle.

Devonte' kind of threw that out in 2018--but I think more what Bill realized is that with his new offense, it's better if you can have 3-4 guys take the ball off of a rebound or outlet from the 5. The days of having 2 guys flare to the sideline outlet off of a rebound is just too slow now. Grab it and go--no team has been better than that than 2022. If it's not the best transition team of the Self era, I don't know which one is.

In 2022, there's just no way you can play 2 guys together that can't guard the perimeter. That's dictating lineups now more than anything. Goes for every program in the country.

That's why I never see Clemence playing at the 4 here. Even though I do think he could be a similar player to Luke Babbitt and play in the NBA.

I wonder how much of it is Perry leaving and Self hanging with the Mayor and suddenly adopting some whole new scheme, and how much of it is the best-5-guys-out-there-regardless and 2017 found us down Dok and with Bragg and Coleby borderline unplayable

Agree there. And a big part of ZCs development at KU will depend on improving his speed and lateral quickness so that he can guard on the perimeter more effectively.

Although, imo, if ZC can't guard 4s or play the 4 in college then I don't see how he can guard NBA 4s. But we are still 12+ months away from knowing whether an NBA future for him is realistic.

Perry played a lot more on the perimeter in 2016 than he did in the 3 years before combined, so the change was already happening. Kim English then Georges Niang were firsthand looks how effective it is.

After Perry left, Josh was a pretty close to perfect college 4, especially since he shot the 3 way above his ability that season. Guys like Bragg and Preston could have also been really good college 4's. SDS was always a 5--a spell for Udoka.

I think you have to hide him on defense like Babbitt's teams do, or even play him at the 5 considering some NBA teams are playing really small now.

Yes. And Selden, Niang, and PhDHawk were BFF's.
