Do you have firewood racks or do you stack by building towers/building in a circle?

Yesterday, I moved half a cord from my yard under my overhang on my garage that keeps the rain and snow off. Have had a couple small fires already to take the edge off.

I just stack in rows of 12' x 4' with t posts on each end to hold it. then tarp it. Its on gravel and pallets. Im gonna build a wood shed but haven't got around to it. Then I have a small covered structure that holds a little over 1/3rd cord next to the house. I use the tractor and a pallet to move from the main stack to the house stack to keep it stocked.

Ive never tried the Holz Hausen stack yet but might in the future....We'll see.

I wheelbarrow bout 10-15 logs at a time back and forth and make alternating crisscross towers for the edges.

I did that, the wheelbarrow trek, prior to the tractor. But man is the tractor handy for that. Cuts way down on the amount of trips.....and Running a wheelbarrow with 15 logs in it, every night or morning.... 75 yards through a foot of snow is fucking miserable. Then i started using a sled instead....that was better, but still not great.

I move a cord pre winter and the garage is steps from my backdoor - so the initial move sucks but future pdub appreciates it.

We usually run through just over a cord since we only burn Friday night through Sunday night ( unless there's an outage ).

I'm guessing you run through 7 cords and try to mostly heat your house via wood stove.

yep, I'm 6-7 cords a year and its currently my only source of heat.

At the cost of propane/natural gas/oil vs wood, you're probably paying half.
7 cords of unseasoned would cost me around 1600.
I definitely paid twice that last winter.

seasoned cord seems to bounce around 3-400 each around here.

But I got 2 cords for free.....its elm...definetely not my favorite. I dislike it actually....but mix it in with the other stuff and it does alright.

1 bought 1 cord (tamarack) for 225 just because it was a good deal.

the other 4 cords are all tamarack and red fir...with a few pieces of lodgepole mixed in that only cost me time and fuel...and $20 for a wood cutting permit.

plus the time and effort to process it all.

i’d imagine it’s tough when you’ve gotta deal with permits and ensuring that nobody else swoops in on you haul, but it just occurred to me that a old friend used to do that to at least lessen the curing time

I get unseasoned for 230/cord and set it out in the front yard for a year.
Get a new cord each year, move the previous season under the garage.
I have no idea what type of wood it is.

nah, im only allowed to cut standing dead trees. We aren't technically even supposed to touch the fallen trees or reprod etc. and we can't cut live trees at all unless its on your personal property.

You can, however, buy plots where your the only person/persons allowed in a certain section of land. But to do that you have to take all the dead trees in the whole area or you get a penalty. Its mainly for commercial firewood getters. You can buy plots with estimated 40 cords up to I think a 1000 cord plot. Tjays for guys with skid steers and multiple winch/snatch block set ups etc.

I recall my Dad doing a Holz Hausen once when I was a kid. Maybe it stood so long because it was curing, or maybe it was too pretty to take from.

I think in theory their a good idea...its a smaller footprint for the same amount of wood. It seems like stacks would get better airflow though, I dont understand how air moves through the holz hausen as well.....but, people who use them swear by them.

The BUD wanted to help stack a new cord last season.
I was skeptical.
It's important to pick the right pieces to build the ends of the tower - they need to be level.

After the second time she knocked over my tower, she was relieved of her services.

1. thats why I use posts on each end...less concern about the end if the stack

2. tarps are great for keeping rain and snow off the stack.....perhaps that was pdubs plan all along?
