Ja’Kobe Walter, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound senior-to-be men’s basketball shooting guard from McKinney (Texas) High School, has included Kansas on his list of eight schools.

Walter, the No,. 17-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2023 by ESPN.com and 247sports.com and No. 34-ranked player nationally by Rivals.com, has revealed a list of KU, Baylor, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Seton Hall and UCLA to On3.com analyst Joe Tipton.

"First and foremost, Jackson is tough. If there is anything Self covets most in a guard it is toughness. That toughness shows on his willingness to get to the rim, his ability to defend and perhaps most importantly it shows with his mental makeup. This guy wants the ball in his hands when it is all on the line and that mentality is exactly what has been the trademark of Self’s best guards at Kansas.

While 247Sports projects Jackson as a point guard, he’s also got the other thing that Self really covets and that’s versatility. Perhaps as much as any coach in college hoops, Self loves combo guards that can play multiple backcourt spots. Given that Dejuan Harris is going to be back with a ton of experience under his belt at the point, it is likely that Jackson will play a bit “off” the ball but in reality, he’ll be another guy who can be used to initiate offense, play fast and put tremendous pressure on defenses because of the job he and Harris will be able to do in getting into the lane to create deep finishes or opportunities for others.

On top of all of that, Jackson is going to inject a level of athleticism, physicality and size into the Kansas backcourt. Now, he does need some polish as a decision maker – that’s where playing alongside Harris will be quite beneficial - -and he will need to get more consistent as a jump shooter but it’s pretty tough to envision any scenario where Jackson doesn’t play big minutes early on."

Is this the most…homogeneous recruiting class we’ve ever had?

So far we basically got 3 combo guards within a couple inches of each other.

No way all them are back next year. Juan ain't going nowhere. Feels like its yesefu or Pettigrew. Dont forget about Kyle cuffe either

Yesufu has already transferred, so my money would be on Pettiford. Hopefully he can stay healthy. He was a kind of a "flyer" offer. Sometimes those are Frank Mason and other times they are not.

Jackson looks like he could be a frosh starter on opening night.

cuz you'd think staff would wanna groom a guy like Yes to play lead at some point, rather than just sorta labeling him a 2-guard. Or, maybe they are grooming him, but it's just not happening, or there's still more pure PGs on the roster they like more anyway.

but, at least next year, much may depend on how ready the new guys are...isn't Elmarko ranked about the same as Devon Dotson at the same point?

I think there's a lot of truth to this. Basketball sees countless off-guards in point guards' bodies. Allen Iverson is probably the most famous one, but his skillset is nearly unmatched in basketball history, so that's going to work out for someone like that.

Frank and Devonte' were just so special. I will always argue that I don't think Mario ever turned into a good point guard in the traditional sense of the term.

I think Mario is undervalued as a PG, but yea I know what you mean.

He led the natty team in assists, but wasn't ever the only ball handler out there, and always had at least one other small guard who was more so the PG alongside him.

And he racked up over 2400 assists in the NBA, was even listed as the PG, but (at least for most of his career in MIA) always played alongside at least one other superstar who was more so the lead guy.

he's prob more the "off-guard in a point guards' body," but still, was a lot less out of place in the primary ball-handler role than a lot of those other dudes.
