Individual World Cup performances make better opportunities for players to get more run or change clubs.

But the US is so fucking scared to play attacking soccer and give their guys a chance. Some of this is due to Gregggggggs style of play which hardly gives chances for strikers or skill guys, but most of this relies on the Organization as a whole.

They’re happy with draws on the road. Go fucking try to win. Look at what some of the top UEFA teams have to play against in their qualifications. They won 1 game off of US soil. They are an incorrectly decided disallowed Jamaica goal from being in 4th place.

The form of this team is soooo bad. They need to play friendlies against top notch competition this summer. There’s no other way of putting it. Or else we’re looking at a group exit and another wasted World Cup.

Our tactics of overloading the wings and putting through cross after helpless cross is our only way of attack and it’s so easy to defend. But yet, that’s what our failed 2nd division Swedish league coach getting paid $1.3M wants to do. I’ve never seen fullbacks used as much as Greggggggggg uses them. And he loves to sub them out too. Imagine using a sub every game on that position. Pathetic management of the roster. Pathetic lack of creativity. Pathetic celebrations for getting into the World Cup on goal difference alone.

Fuck that.

We are wasting this fucking talent.

Also, separate note, and hopeful thinking, but we want Poland to somehow tie ( or win! ) Argentina today to finish 1st in Group C and Australia to tie or beat Denmark so that part of our bracket is busted.

The first 15 minutes were great. Hard shots on goal. Navas made some great saves. After that, it was complete garbage. Defense was completely lost on the 2 goals. First goal Acosta didn't mark his man, and Zimmerman completely whiffed on the clearing header. The second goal was on a scramble and Yedlin stood at the 6 yard line with no fucking clue of what was going on.

We have such a small 3rd world country mindset when it comes to soccer.

"We're going to play an outdoor game in Minnesota in February because the elements." Fuck that.

"We didn't play that well because of the surface" Fuck that. As Taylor Twellman pointed out 4 years ago, Belgium smoked Bosnia and they played on a cow pasture.

"Mission accomplished" Fuck that. You said your goal was to finish 1 or 2 in the group. You failed in that aspect.

"Verticality on the outsides" Fuck that. Use your best pieces, Pulisic, Reyna, McKennie, Adams, Musah and work from the middle and don't rely on Antonee Robinson and Sergio Dest to do all the work for you.
Point still stands except for that last pice. McKennie, Adams and Musah have been incredible in the middle.

I think you have a touch of that dude bro on the internet.
We attacked just fine in the first half of Wales and Iran.
And the entire England game.

We advanced. We don't have a team of international stars like you think we do.

This is kinda crazy, and what Unholy is referring to, that you're shitting on Berhalter not even 24 hours after we just advanced to the last 16 teams in the World.

I'll also say, Berhalter was bold to bring such a young squad, and this World Cup could be a great building block for 2026 on our home soil with likely most of the guys at this cup starting for the next.

I don't even think they're stars. But the gap is as close as it's been and the US is still treating this like 2002 where it's a bunch of MLS dudes who are all about muddying things up and then send a prayer of a clearance into a counter attack. We have so much more potential than that. We have the potential to get our guys to play an open and free style of play and do quite well.

Love that we advanced. Probably the best the US has played in a few years, for sure. Again, their defense has been absolutely superb.

It's only going to get better. Gregg has been so good with lineups and tactics, but after halftime he's completely clueless of what to do on the fly.

Van Gaal is on the other bench Saturday. You better believe he'll know what to do.

Berhalter is certainly not above criticism or reproach. But after missing World Cup 2018, what were the expectations of this team? Getting out of the group stage was probably the most anyone could have hoped for. Being one of the last 16 teams with a chance to win it all just one cycle removed from a spectacular failure. I think now is a good time to appreciate how far we've come and the fact that we are achieving those benchmarks. Then let's worry about style points in 2026 when these 20-24 year old players are in their primes at ages 24-28.

MY POINT! My word did we look so much better than all 3 teams when we opened up, attacked, kept the pressure one.

What happened when we didn't? We were conservative, we were timid, we held on by the hair of our chin.

GO ATTACK! You are the better side when you do.

Again, his lineups and opening tactics this tournament. Superb. Halftime hits. Terrible.

This.

Guys I'm not even that mad at Gregg. Could his 2nd half tactics be better. Absolutely.

I'm just mad that we are content with Group of 16 appearances. We can be better than that! I think the mentality is holding us back from there. The gap from us to like Brazil has probably never been closer. Maybe except for 2009 Confederations Cup win over Spain in the semis.

I've made this comparison before I think but we're similar to ksu football.
A good team made up of unheralded players who can hang with the big boys but aren't really a threat to win anything significant.

Wanting the US to do better than they have so far would be like ksu fans bitching about how KU kept the game close til the 4th quarter despite the fact they landed a spot in the B12 championship game.

Using your earlier comment "Over half of your roster are playing in the top European Leagues. Italy, Spain, England and Germany" for Brazil.

4th in minutes Premiere League.
10th Bundesliga.
3rd La Liga.
2nd Serie A.

Do you actually think, at this moment in time, if we swapped coaches for any coach in the world, you'd get to pick the coach, that we could beat the top 10 teams in the world in a best out of 5 matches?

I think there's a chance we get by the Netherlands. It'll take some luck. That's soccer.
But I do think they'd beat us in a best of 5 scenario.

I don't really follow but my friends that do were in agreement last night that if Iran scores, which given the nature of the game and some of Iran's shot attempts, that's a matter of inches on the kick, Gregg would have absolutely been fired for not advancing when all they had to do was beat the 4th ranked team in the group. Coaching life is crazy, an inch or two changes everything.

I also can't recall what minute it was, but there was an Iran shot attempt in the second half that would have been a foul and possible yellow card if it were in the middle of the pitch. Bad call or not, a single call could have also changed the coach's future. Rough job. Coaches have been fired in the middle of the World Cup.

I mean, it's very likely Berhalter won't have the job much longer after the World Cup anyway. Very rarely do national teams allow managers to stick around for two World Cup cycles. With the way it has blown up in the USA's face the last couple times, I'd wager Berhalter lays the foundation now for someone else to flourish with this squad in 2026. The expectations will be different in 2026. The goal won't be just getting out of the group then.
